Anyone ever owned a mack U model

Ive been eyeballing a U600 single axle dump for a year or two and finally caught the guy. Ran when parked but has been around 8-10 years. 800$ but the cabs crusty. Ive wanted a U model for while, can I use other steel cabs of the same year from R models.

Short answer,no.You can use the doors, roof panel, windshields and frame. The R model firewall is not cut out for the engine, and the steering shaft goes through the firewall in a completely different spot. The U model hood will not come any where near close to lining up to the R model cab.In the mid 80's I cut an R model cab up to rebuild a U model cab,The frame mounts and shift levers are nowhere near close either.

The only one I know of would be the DM with the short nose. The offset cabs with the long noses, like the RD's,do not have the firewall and floor configuration to bolt on to the U.Where I am the U model cab is probably the easier one to find anyway.Lots of them were used as fleet trucks. For years the yards used to keep Mack stuff around, there were always buyers for it but in the last few years that's kind of gone by the wayside. My friend has a salvage yard and he had 10 or a dozen around because they would get picked right down to the frame rails. When I saw he had none I asked him about it,and he said keeping them around to sell 3 parts a year was not worth it.

The only ones that will fit without major alterations are the DM cabs, which are the same. R cabs are waaay different.

I didn't own the U model. It belonged to a man I worked for at the time.He ran R models hauling dump trailers, and the U model was to replace his B model that he had plowed snow with since 1969.It wasn't the upgrade we thought it was going to be.We hated the straight 5 speed after plowing snow with the quadruplex.Other than the improved brakes we all were just as happy driving the B model. We used those little single axles like overgrown pickups. We could fit 10 yards of material in the body,to help out on small jobs.If we had some light work for a tractor we could have the dump body off and the fifth wheel on it in just under an hour.
