AZglide part 3

Last batch is some of the buses and trailers that it's hauled from the field to barns and the tipping harvester. My boys totally hate going to school. They both said this is the best use of a bus they have seen. Lol

Thank you for taking us on a tour of your equipment and operation. How many acres of baccer are you growing, and have contracts down your way become fewer and smaller like in my area?

We're growing 106 acres this year. Used to there wasn't but maybe 2 people that farmed nearby that did not raise any baccer. Now it's down to just us and 1 more father/son operation that has any. Everyone else either retired, lost their contracts, or just got totally disgusted with the market in 2019 and bowed out. There are days I wonder why we keep on with it, but I enjoy doing the most of what it takes to grow it. The market situation has gotten better since some of the supply has dwindled. Getting to be now ya have to ride awhile to see a field of it as where used to it was everywhere around here.

I was told once that the Flue Cured wouldn't burn right in cigarette. They had to have the Burley to mix with it to make it burn properly.

Was/is there any truth to the story I heard a couple of times over the years that in N. Carolina or Virginia, a farmer could raise a family on 14 acres of tobacco?

Used to you could. Used to the average quota amounted to about 20 to 30 acres per operation. You need to double that and grain acreage nowadays to equal 20 plus years ago.

I'm in Eastern N.C. Yes for cigarettes it takes several different styles of tobacco to achieve the flavor the mfg wants for that brand. They keep saying a key grade of baccer they need can only be purchased from growers in N.C.

Burley won't burn by itself either, that's why the companies added other ingredients that they hid as being proprietary.
All of the many years we grew air cured burley it was for the right combination with other added tobacco that gave it the right flavor for cigarettes.

Thanks for the pictures. A lot different from what I grew up doing, cut it, stick it and put in barn all by hand. None grown around here now but north of me are some big fields. Went for a ride yesterday between Springfield and Clarksville TN. Fields ranged from just planted to almost ready to cut. All dark fired.
Thanks again for the pictures. Ill try to get some pictures when they start cutting and firing. Ive heard the volunteer fire departments have their hands full in the fall. City folks think the barns are on fire from all the smoke.
