Case 1030 Generator...

Had my 12V- 3 brush Genny rebuilt at a shop...good regulator(2 coil) ; put it on my tractor and doesnt charge...Arm is hot
running but Field post is not; took back to him and shows 13.2 on his test stand but when I put it on my tractor still nothing;
Arm is hot running but Field is not; so is the contact NOT pulling in on the regulator when running? and why not? Thanks.

When the ARM post is hot when running- why polarize the Genny? I cant get the Field wire to get hot so it is not charging......

o, if Fld is supposed to be 'hot', then jumper it to ARM & if it charges, then VR or wiring is your problem. Simple , eh?

Hell hes' the one that rebuilt it and charged me big bucks! Took it back twice....I must have a wiring problem on this dang tractor....JMOR you say I can jump Field to Arm?

aybe yes & maybe no. You said field not hot when running, but do you know that it is supposed to be hot or at ground? Since it is a 3 brush generator (you said), then I am relatively sure that field needs to be grounded for full output. 3rd brush feeds power to field coils and field terminal grounds other end of field coil winding......would be normal. If this is the way your generator is built and you ground field and still see no charge, then while running jumper BATT to ARM and if it charges like that, it is either wiring error of cutout contacts in VR are not closing. You manually "closed " cut out with BATT to ARM jumper.

I have Batt to Arm jumper so both terminals are hot; no voltage on Field terminal and not charging. Thanks

will post a drawing of what I believe you have in a bit. If like the
drawing, the VR would have field terminal grounded when calling for charge, thus no voltage on field terminal. See if you have gen field voltage when no wire connected to gen field terminal and at same time as running and arm hot? If no field voltage under these conditions, then it would appear that 3rd brush is not providing power to field or field is open.

when tractor is running- I have 12.3V on battery post at regulator; 9.8 V on Arm post and 0.00 on Field post.

ooks like cut out not closing and for a good reason....the gen output is too low. If cut out closed at this point, the battery would discharge into the generator. We never absolutely determined what generator you have. Over decades and owners, it is never a certainty as to what is installed today. Any tags, markings, etc. on gen?

as far as I know this is original generator that came on case....family tractor since new; I will try to see a tag....thanks
