Installing Hydraulic Piston Pump on Ford 650

I am considering replacing the hdy piston pump on my 1956 ford 650; but wonder if there is more to it than taking the old one off and putting the new one on. For example, will the pump need to be primed - and if so, how?

Thanks in advance.

BTW: I paid a tractor repair shop to rebuild the existing pump. However, it is now actually squirting fluid from one of the joints separating the sections of the pump. The shop has put me off for 6 weeks already.

Be sure you are replacing it with the exact type and size as the original. If it really is a piston pump, it is probably variable displacement and expensive. The type pump must be matched to the system type, open or closed center.

Most of those had simple gear pumps.

I would first try taking it apart and see what is wrong. Probably the shim blew out if it's a gear pump. Note, 'shim' not a gasket. That sets the gear end clearance.

Be aware though, taking it apart will likely void the warranty.

You can pretty much just take the old one off and put the new one on. If you have a good pump it will probably self-prime. You could also take out the hex plug and prefill with oil if you want to help the pump with initial priming.

You can rebuild the pump yourself if you are so inclined. All the parts are readily available.

No sir, it was either a vane or piston pump. I think you must be confusing the tractor with another.

You may want to consider another option. I've rebuilt my piston pump several times and I know it's worn internally. This is an option I am considering.

Okay, back home and removed pump from the 1956 Ford 650. The hdy pump is NCA905B. Sounds like an early 8N or so pump. Or is the pump an NCA905B- or maybe just the housing for the proof meter and mounting the pump to the tractor???

Maybe I'll just put new O rings on it and mount the pump back onto the tractor???

Just thinking out loud. Anyone want to help me think??

NCA-905-B is the pump gear housing for piston pumps NAA-600-C and NCA-600-E. See the parts diagram below.

Thank you, sir. That helps. I have the Shop Manual, but not the Parts Manual for my 650. Hope that the gaskets I have ordered will do the job.
