Corn crop duster

Saw a crop duster the other day, corn was full grown and had ears on it with dark brown silk. Spraying for??? My corn is covered with honey bees. Will that crop duster kill millions of honey bees???
 
A person who lives in Indy said she had no bees to pollinate her zucchini. So she does it herself.

I have many flowers around buildings so I don't have to weed eat.

I have heard of those crop dusters but have never seen one here in Ohio in my 77 years. What are they dusting for?
 
Around here they are called Air Tractors and I really haven't seen them spraying the fields around me much this year. That might explain why I'm seeing more honeybees around my Spirea this summer. I'm sure they will start spraying as soon as someone spots bugs in their fields. I have even seen a helicopter or two around here set up for spraying fields.

Probably spraying fungicide to keep the plants alive longer. It slows drying of the corn. It gives them more time to harvest standing corn instead of down corn and ear loss.
 
Here in central wisconsin they do alot of crop dusting, Fungicide alot more so than spraying for bugs.Here if they know you have bee hives they will call you ahead of time if they need to spray for bugs.Any crop dusting that would harm bees is done very early in the morning or usually very late close to sunset when bee,s don't fly as much.
 
Crop dusting is a huge industry around me. One of my earliest memories was watching Rucker Brothers Flying Service dusting crops north of us - they were using converted WW2 Stearman biplanes. Still a big business and a very important one as far as yields go, although the huge wheeled chemical sprayers have cut into the business I presume.. They even seed some cover crops with planes. Spray planes are part of the arsenal that makes it possible to feed the world.

Air Tractor is a brand name for a specialized spray plane made in Olney Texas. Cessna makes (or made, I have not kept up) an Ag Wagon and there are (or were) Piper Pawnees and others. They are fun to watch!
 
To me a crop duster was an atachment the was either had carried or mounted on your tractor. Never a plane as they were all sprayers or could put out a crop like wheat in standing corn.
 
We have air tractors fly over some , but not this early in the growing season. Spraying fungicide on field corn. They use G P S satelite guidance and light bars mounted in the cockpit that show them where to fly. The light bar tells when they are lined up against the last pass shows on a screen in the cockpit. The pilot sees a green light when the plane is on track. I'd say they are very careful about shutting the spray off before crossing a property line. Field corn is self pollinating , would not think bees would be in a corn field. Sweet corn might be different. Don't think fungicide would be good for bees.
 
In my area Black Gold Farms have a large operation here. They grow potatoes on rented ground. They use spray planes on every field several times during growing season. I don't know what they apply. The planes are fun to watch though.
Bluebird Ag is a local flying service, they have air tractors and a Piper plane, they also have a helicopter and a 10foot (+or-?) drone. joe

There are selective bug killers just like selective herbicide. We spray one that causes grasshoppers to grow so fast they explode but leaves the bees and other beneficial insects . Thats the thing the anti farm crowd doesnt want you to know
 
When was that written? I was still getting 2,4d two years ago.
2,4,5t was the dangerous one. If the temperature was not controlled properly, you also synthesized dioxin with it.
 
My guess it's just fungicide. Spraying herbicides on that tall of corn would not do much good since the weeds are under the corn, we use drops on the sprayer to get weeds down in the corn.
