The tools are soaking in an acid to remove rust.

This is the after pic of finished project.

He repurposed the pickax handle and used it on the sledge. He liked the old shape.

Before the lockdown my boy had no interest in making sawdust. Now making wood handles is his hobby.

I've given him some of my duplicate saws and sanders. His only problem is living in a subdivision with a HOA and a 3 car garage.
I'm returning these tools to my old college friend today. He's having his annual cookout.
He's also our CPA. Mine for the past 40 years.
If you live close to Plainfield you might want to meet my son. He works cheap. Usually a beer or booze.

Ok George, I'll bite. What is the acid he used and how long? I've got a few antique tools that need cleaning. Thanks.

I am pilling him up a pile of wood, hickory, ash and oak all drying , got to get it too him

We were thinking of driving to Dover, anytime convent with you.
He came to my place yesterday and picked up some wood from my Mini Menards warehouse.
Wants to build another workbench.
Do you have anything that needs a handle?
I think he's getting good at making sawdust.

Soaked in food grade citric acid overnight. The liquid turned black.

Then he used a flap wheel, gun blue and linseed oil.

Sometimes he uses a propane torch to darken the wood to give it an antique look.

Jerry,
I've put wet lumber in the rafters of pole barn before. It Drys very fast in the heat.
My boy's garage is small, so I'm thinking some of the wood will be stored in my pole barn.

No I make too many trips to Canton Texas flea market , great handel man down there/
but thanks for thinking about me.

I wish these were mine, I'd send them to you, would keep him busy for a while!

Shipping would not be cheap though!

My son got interested making handles for
antique axes, some of which he purchased
from foreign countries.
I thought what a strange hobby.

Paul, shipping isn't cheap. FedEx is about a dollar a pound each way. By boy says it's about half the price to buy ready made handles than to buy good wood.
Expensive hobby. Everyone has to have a hobby.

Nice work. It is rewarding to develop a skill. Unfortunately, in our throwaway society, it is often cheaper to buy a new tool than to replace a broken handle!

Paul,
Right now my boy is waiting on a shipment of wood from Jerry. The price of wood is crazy. You could buy new already handle for half what it costs to make one.
When he gets some Hickory I'll post back, give you his address to send it to.
