Serial number places it around 1964/1965. 6503 S-Y. ?

Engine block number [u:fbb565a64e]BSD[/u:fbb565a64e] 361 516. ??? Not what we have found in service and operator manuals.

The engine (block, head, water pump) has been painted red over what appears original yellow. ???

I guess I do not understand your question but the ih 8906 ran a IH 361 cu inch engine. What is your
question , are you doubting that is what you have.

That serial number puts yours as an early '64. I don't have the reference for the letters close at hand. Now get yourself an owner's manual for it.

The questions are; Why is the engine yellow? And BSD on the block is confusing. We've found other letters, but no BSD.

My brother is thinking possibly the engine is a replacement or that for a construction type tractor.

We've found much in the owner's manual. Yes, 361 cu. in. 94 hp PTO.
The manual for a mechanic doesn't seem to be the correct one.

Heading to the shop this morning to see what my brother has come with.......

Don't read too much into the yellow paint. It's a casting sealant/primer that they put on the engine block at the foundry.
