Had to fire up the generator again.

Power went out this morning before we got up.
Fired up the generator again.
Heard there were 3400 customers without power.
Was out for about 2 1/2 hours.
Gonna start looking for a whole house generator soon.

Yep John.
It is nice to have a good generator.
I am ready for a larger one though.
Will keep this one as a backup.
I like being prepared.

Brother in law has a Generac- he's well satisfied with it. Comes on automatically when power goes out.
Had a customer at Farm Credit with 8 huge chicken houses. His generator was about the size of your average automobile, with a huge Cat diesel. Pull the main breaker, and about 5 seconds later it would roar to life.

Our power goes out for 1 - 2 days almost every year - a downside to living in the woods. Following an ice storm in 1991 we were in the dark nearly 2 WEEKS(!)

Consequently over the years I have collected/refurbished no less than 4 generators - a pair of 5 kw Colemans, a 3.5 kw Honda and a 6 kw Onan diesel. The Onan has become my primary backup on account of its outstanding fuel economy; the Honda is its backup. The Colemans I keep to share with neighbors when the need arises.

I like being prepared too!

We have been blessed with a REC that really works at keeping the lines cleared of trees and keeping poles replaced when needed. I think we have been without power for six hours total in 20 years.

Our REC is very good also and have done everything I have asked them to do over the years.
Sometimes they get overwhelmed like the big tornado last year and the hurricane last year.
I cannot complain about them one bit.
They have cut trees for me that lightning killed and were not a real danger to their line.

Have we become so yuppified and dependent on modern conveniences that we can not go a couple of hours without electricity every few months.
About like not being able to go to the bathroom without your cell phone.
But to each their own. What ever makes you happy.

By the way I do have a 6k generator.
But I only use it after a hurricane when the power is off for days or even weeks at a time.

If I loose power I just have to live with it. I do have a generator but the wiring on it is a mess and I have no diagram to figure out how some one goofed it up so badly. Plus it will not start at this time due to the wiring

We each grew up in late 40's, 50's and early 60's and dealt with power outages. We raised our family in the 60's, 70's and 80's and dealt with power outages. I retired in 2007 and we have dealt with power outages. We never had any kind of generator other than what was on our vehicles.
No more. 2 years ago we bought a 20 kw, natural gas powered, Cummins, whole house generator. Spoiled? OK. We decided that we deserved it!

Take a look at Electric Generators Direct. About 7 years ago I bought a 12kw standby, self start generator from them for $2,835 delivered including a 2 % discount for paying by personal check. A transfer switch, breaker panel, and all the wiring to hook it up was included. It's dual fuel, propane or NG. They were good people to work with. I recommended them to 3 friends who were very happy with them.

I had a Kohler 20 KW standby generator installed last November and am happy with it. In Feb when we had ice storm it came on in 13 seconds after power went out and ran for about 26 hours with no problems at all. As long as I have propane in tank I think it will take care of my whole house. I know it runs everything now including my 4 ton AC. I do have gas stove, water heater and gas heat for winter.I have about 2200 sq. ft. to heat and cool BTW.

Well John, I fired it up this morning because we never know how long we will be out.
Last year we were out twice for nearly 3 days each.
This past winter when I was having a new metal roof put on and it went out, I fired it up so the crew could keep using their metal cutters and not stand around waiting.
But the most important reason I fire it up is to run my well pump.
Then I start running other things.
I am probably the least yuppyfied person around, but since I have the generator, I am going to use it.

We are also. We moved to our current farm 5 years ago and have not had an outage long enough to fire the generator since we been here and we are 3 places from the end of the line.

Without power the pipes freeze, the basement floods, the ice cream melts and the only water is hauled from the creek in a pail .

The neighbor had a Generac put in a couple years ago and have not used it yet. For me, I just use a 3250 watt portable generator if needed, which is not very often. The R.O.I. is not very good where I live, so the money spent on one is more for convenience.

My brother and I looked at the HF Predator 10k generator but went with a Firman 10k/8k generator Thursday. Bought it through a Bumper to Bumper parts store. Has 3 yr. warranty . Features automatic choke, remote start, electric start, or recoil start, mini digital Volts, Freq, and Hour meter. I was surprised how easy it was to pul start it. Battery and wheel kit were included. Got to see electrician about hook up to house. In the meantime I will be using it and a large fan in the tractor shed tearing down the 8n. I have a well and need this for power outages.

I have that same interlock in my Square D panel. For as little as it costs to do it this way, there is no excuse to start Billy Bobbing things that could get people hurt or killed.

Richard G,

Always good to be prepared. I have one here that has been collecting dust. Last significant outage was in 2012.

I just tried to sell it.... No bites!

Old: Call me - I am in Branch (Macks Creek), south of Camdenton. Sort of close by. I used to work on generators for a living, so know a little about them. seven-five-seven-four-three-four-three-eight-three-five. I'm retired so available most any time. zuhnc

Richard G,

Last big one was on 2006, we have been dodging the bullet since.

It is a commercial grade 66 amps @120 bolts.
It pull starts easier then a lawnmower engine

Next snow storm maybe?

Guido.

Where did the generator guy go? Can't remember his handle, haven't seen him on here for a while.

Seems to me he hated Generac generators.

(quoted from post at 17:53:23 06/27/21) Richard;
Please don't take what I said as a attack on you personally.
I meant it as a question on our society in general.
People today have gotten to where they can not be without any modern convenience even for a short time.

So how long does one have to "pay their dues" before it becomes acceptable to you?

I figure it ain't my business how people spend their money.

Living in the sticks is a good way to lose power at least once a year if not twice, three, four, five, six, seven, you gotta be kidding me, flippin' power company, clear the trees will'ya?
The generator became a needed item fast enough as the freezer warms up and things melt, not to mention the reefer.
TV off? Thanks for the mandatory silence.
The larger stand-by generator is currently back ordered for at least 2 more weeks.
Then I will be lazy and get an electrician to wire it in.
Automatic switching and the only problem after that will be the propane tanks hook-up.

I bought a nice low hour used Onan 20 Kw unit from an REC that replaced them every 10 years regardless of the hours on them. I switched it from LP to natural gas, and did the installation myself. It is so nice to know that all I have to do is fire it up and throw the manual transfer switch and power is there if needed and with the natural gas I don't have to go out and refuel every 8 hours like I did with the older 8 Kw gasoline unit we used for the last 25 years or so. It sure gives peace of mind to know it is there if needed.

When we start traveling south for the winter .
We will have to install an auto start/auto transfer unit .

I think that Billy S. had some health issues and was off the forums for some time. He is back on the SmokStak forums now, I don't know about any other forums.
You are correct; he doesn't like Generac generators. Most don't work when they are supposed to, although a few work as advertised.
I have worked on a multitude of generator brands, and know a little about them. zuhnc

Bummer. Maybe we need Guido to invent Ice Cream that doesn't melt. Would make life easier for me. If anyone could do it, it would be Guido. lol
