Info on dogbane plant

Starting last summer this dogbane plant starting appearing in my hayfields .i cant recall ever seeing it before last year it seems to be all over this eastern portion of Ohio. Anyone else dealing with it in your area.

The big wide leaves look like milkweed to me. had them around since forever. Now the state wants to spend money to help them since they are a feed source for the monarch butterfly. They want to make them a protected plant on ditch banks and such. Fools. I have a neighbor that if things go for hm will be planting it and getting paid by the government for it to raise weeds for the monarch butterfly and other things.

Yes, the large leafed plants in the photo are milkweed, however, they are not Common Milkweed that is not a source but rather the source of food for monarch butterflies. Difficult to be precise but that looks to be Swamp Milkweed. Both are perennial.

Yes, dogbane.

I have it too.

It is perennial, spreads by both seed and rhizome, and is VERY difficult to control. Routine mowing will slow spread a bit but will not control it.

24D will not touch it. Dicamba may if applied at high concentration, at the right time, and probably multiple applications.

I sprayed much of mine with Crossbow last fall. It turned brown in about three weeks and I thought I had gotten it but it is back with a vengeance this year.

I have test sprayed spots using weed killer from Lowes including dicamba and a hand sprayer but such low concentrations of dicamba have little effect.

May try Milestone this year.

Let me know if you have any luck.

In the young stage dogbane looks very much like milkweed. Milkweed has hairy stems. Mature dogbane does look quite different than milkweed.

More research it seems that a wide variety of plants have been relabeled as Dogbane Dog Bane and there may be little commonality in what they look like. If the leaf is torn and milky sap comes out, it is likely a milkweed variety no matter the name. Jim

Dogbane has milky sap also. Milkweed has hairy stems. When dogbane matures it looks different than milkweed. It's hard to tell from milkweed when dogbane is young.

According to my weed management chart I got from the extension office(KY), the best thing to spray it with is Pasture Gard, and second best is Crossbow. The optimal time to spray is May thru August. Mark.

Yes, Round Up will kill it along with everything else.

I have eradicated a few very small patches before spreading with Round Up.

I've got it in Adams co. Ohio

Had one field last fall was so bad I didn't want it for hay. I sprayed it with GrazonNxt and Remedy..can't remember if I put crossbow in the mix as well, gotta keep better notes.

That field had hemp dogbane, ironweed, thistles...it was a mess.

Just baled it, couple places that I probably missed had some weeds, but the field is clean other than that. Got some milkweed, once it grows back think I'll spot spray glyphosate.

Hi-dep has dogbane listed, may try that in some other fields.

Rickinohio, 1st you are correct, you have pictured hemp dogbane. I;m pretty close to you geographically and yes I do seem to see more of it than in past years. I would add this nugget of info-----looking at your picture with the dogbane and all the alsike white clover, you may do well to get a soil test and work on your fertility, getting the proper hayfield grasses growing will help to crowd out the dogbane and the clover.
