replacing the roller chain on the hay sweep forks or the neighbors 24t baler. Lets just say the drive sprocket is 12 tooth and the driven sprocket is 24 tooth. It doesn't matter how long
the chain is right? Number of links in chain won't matter will it? Old chain was so stretched out at some point someone must have taken a link out so now when I get new chain I have to
add a half link to get it to fit. As long as the sprockets are the same size all should be good.

If its like a new holland there are timing marks that have to line up length doesnt matter as long as its in time or you can get it timed

Number of links won't matter, ratio is determined by the number of sprocket teeth.

However, installing new chain on worn sprockets is not good practice.

An old guy who was good at fixing balers told me if you take a chain off and replace it be sure the number of links is the same or it will cause you problems. I have ever since did as he said and not had problem but if something happened I could not count the link I then had problems

The official/free John Deere parts site will give you the correct "pitch" count for the chain, then time the feeder forks as the Operator's Manual directs.

Number of links utilized on a JD small sq baler will not affect the timing of that machine & I seriously doubt it will affect timing on most other small sq balers. The number of links between the power side of drive & driven sprockets remains the same not matter of links in the chain & slack in chain is taken up on off side of chain.

Yet people do it all the time with great success.

Unless you are offering to buy new sprockets for this baler, which will likely exceed the value of the baler, IF YOU CAN EVEN BUY NEW SPROCKETS.

I agree new chain can be utilized on worn sprockets. Worn sprockets depending on amount of wear can accelerate chain wear. Frequent chain lubrication can lessen amount of chain wear. My JD 467 rd baler operates fine with worn sprockets & it's baled over 27,500 rd bales.

ell, Sir, there you have "re-assurance", either it is critical or not at all important! Or maybe the message is that your 24T isn't a baler, but a manure spreader?
