mineral feeder for beef cows

What mineral feeder do you use for your beef cows? Do to some happenings around here I will need to change how I feed my beef cows different this summer. Untill now I fed silage in a TMR mixer and added my minerals every feeding. I am going to have to be away for six weeks soon and the cows will be getting pasture and round bales. That way someone only needs to check on them every few days. Local feed store has a round 4 compartment feeder that sets on the ground with a rubber flap that the cows are supposed to nose under to eat their minerals. I have also seen ones with legs that have a top mounted on a swivel that turns to keep the opening out of the wind. I do have some mineral blocks out but my feed man says the loose mineral I have been feeding is better and important as my cows will start to calve late August. Tom

For those 6 weeks just dump it in an old bath tub and dplug the hole. Rain in mineral is no big deal. My cows and sheep lick it up just as good and all I have is old plastic empty lick tubs and a few rubber tubs. If you have been mixing it and dumping on the ground you have been loosing some of it anyway.

I have both types you describe and they work fine. Takes a few days for them to find the mineral in the flat bottom one that sits on the ground with the rubber flap on top. I will tell you, though, that regardless of what the salesman may tell you, cattle are capable of turning over both types of feeder, but not frequently.

It's cheap and easy to make a hanging feeder from a plastic barrel. Like below. But for only 6 weeks I'd just get them some Wind and Rain and put it in a tub.

If you ever get the time, watch 'This Farm Wife' on you tube. The Bernard family in northern NC has a cow/calf operation. They take MJMJ's blue barrel, cut a hole in the side, and hang it in the trees using an old seat belt.
