Hauling the 420 cat backhoe to a job this morning when I noticed smoke coming from the right rear trailer axle.apparently the wheel bearings gave out.by the time I noticed it the friction from everything rubbing together blew the inside dual as I was pulling over .well a tire fire is not real easy to extinguish.I put it out with one of 3 fire extinguishers but it was still hot and smoking.the cops showed up and called the fire department who doused the hotspot just to be sure.if not for the fire Dept I might have been looking for a pond or ditch full of water to Back the trailer into

Good call having the extinguishers on board. May have saved the whole rig. Saw a rig one time where the trailer and 2 loaded trucks were on fire. Guy was able to disconnect and pull away. Never saw the outcome in the local news.

Glad you had the extinguishers. That could have gotten real bad real quick. Glad it worked out with only that damage.

It's hard to see what the trailer is doing all the time. Glad you had the fire extinguisher, and got the fire out. I was going down the freeway, someone went by painting at my trailer. By the time I found a place to pull over a tire had some how wrapped around the drum, and the axle. That was fun removing. Another time I got to my job. a trailer tire was missing. Stan

I flagged a guy down one morning about daybreak. I was stopped at a traffic light in Murphysboro, Illinois and watched him cross the intersection headed east. He had a dozer on a trailer behind a dump truck. The trailer was a deck over, but it had gaps in the deck right over the tires, and one of the tires was rubbing on a dozer cleat and smoking. He'd barely gotten over the Big Muddy bridge when I caught him and got his attention. He checked his mirror and pulled off on the shoulder. It never did blaze, but it sure smoked.

I stop and check my hubs after going 10 miles or so on a trailer I dont know the condition of the bearings. Glad your fire extinguisher worked. I need to have some checked. I always worry they wont if I need them.
