I have owned International scouts since they came out but never been a big JEEP fan. Yesterday afternoon the National gathering of the jeeps was right here close so thought wife and I would check it out. Loretta Lynn ranch hosted , 36 acres of jeep folks waving American and Rebel flags. You could see any kind of jeep ever made , climb a rock bluff, run a mud course or or countless other things. They had it set up and managed well. One guy said over six thousand registered folks. Lots of good eating , country music and yes probably some Tennessee moon shine . We left about dark but I figure the crowd was rocking about midnight. LOL Good old rednecks having fun.

Guess you are never too old to hang out with down to earth country rednecks and have an enjoyable time..

About the way it is.. LOL I never dreamed there were as many jeeps as was there. Must have been ever jeep east of the Mississippi.

So after the show did yo change your mind, and decide to get a jeep? Weren't the early Scouts, and Jeep running gear about the same, except for the motor? Come out to California I will give you an early scout motor if you want it. Stan

I was about 5 or 6 when I drove a military surplus jeep, Mid 50's on the farm
We ran the wheels off the jeep on the dairy farm.
Used it, abused it.. canvas top rotted off.
wouldn't start after a rain. That's why wd40 was invented.. Ignition switch failed so we twisted two wires together and then touched a third wire to engage starter.
Always had the windshield down. Dog road on top of the windshield.
When we got done with it I don't think the junk yard wanted it.

My grandfather had a surplus that stayed in the barn so you could roll start it and go directly to the fuel tank because nothing electrical worked beyond the ignition. Step 1 however was to chase the chickens off and out of it. Coon hounds rode in the back. Top top. Steered like an old boot in a storm.

Thanks STEVE at 78 years of age I am running out of time for projects. You are right scout was somewhat like the jeeps. Thing abut this deal was so many like new 70 thousand dollar vehicles down there running those trails and mud holes .

Remember those magazine ads in the early 50's where you could buy a surplus Jeep for maybe $40 or somethin like that. I wonder if there was any such thing? But why run an ad? Maybe some kind of a scam, who knows.

Sounds like the one at the marina I worked for right out of high school.

If it stayed outside over night, it wouldn't start without blow drying the distributor cap.

But once running, you could drive it down the ramp with water up to the fenders and never miss a lick!

Steve,
We got it stuck so bad, we had to jack it up and put boards under all wheels. That's when I learned 4 wheel drive is only 2 wheel drive. One wheel up front spun and one wheel in the back spun. We were in mud up to the axles.
I've never owned a jeep. Don't want one either.

Only 4x4 I've ever owned is Kawasaki mule. But it's really only 1 wheel up front and 2 wheels in rear with differential lock out engaged. Otherwise it only a 1x1, not a 4x4.
I forget the Kubota is a 4x4. Really a 1x2 with differential lock out.

This is the Jeep my son and I painted 3 years ago.

There are more aftermarket parts geared towards swapping a chebby 350 in a Jeep than anything else out there... Its the cheapest and easiest conversion you can do.

hobo they had some down there that they claimed were putting out over 600 hp. The stuff that was
there just blew my mind. Climbing that rock wall it seemed that tires and suspension reigned over
horse power.

Stan,
If it's any consolation
I'm only 72, but my body feels like I'm 80.
I don't know how you mow in the heat.

Were there any with the 3 point hitch installed in the bed? We had part of the iron but could never find the rest of it and have since cut it up. Always wanted to talk to somebody that had one and used it.

Bill

I had a J3000. The rear springs had twelve leaves, each side. It had a GM 350 engine. Got 7 MPG whether loaded or empty. Never again will I own a Jeep. There's better equipment out there.

BH49 ..... I like it. Any significance to the 18 number? I have a 91 YJ, a bit rougher in shape than yours, I've never put the soft top on. Just think, you and I have to put up with those 'horrible' square headlights that all the Jeep experts frown upon. Actually, I like them. Mine has the 4-cylinder version which is all I need ....

Yep, a Buick 350.
