Charge to haul hay per mile?

What is the going rate per mile to haul round bails of hay. There's this guy that wants 15 and he is about 60 to 70 miles away but i don't know how much to charge.

I charge $100 an hour or $2.50 a mile with semi and 34 bales. I also charge less and different with pickup. Cost of fuel X 2 plus $15-20 an hour for my time. Seems to work out ok for me. some people think they want it hauled for free but registration and insurance and wear and tear on my equipment has to be figured in. My truck doesn't drive more than 20 thousand miles a year and most miles are gravel and fields so I like to make a little money and not do everything for free or at cost.

If I haul 1 load or all day makes a difference as well. For me to take time to run for 1 load basically takes up most of the day. if he wanted 3 I could still do it in 1 day.
sometimes I knock off $1-200 if I run for the same guy 2 days in a row.

should not matter what u haul hay or tractor or equipment, thought it goes by loaded mile.

At some point tractor/trailers were getting $3 a loaded mile. There was a thread on it a while back. Without a back haul they may get that for a round trip.

Figure you miles per gallon loaded with a trailer. 140 mile trip divided by 8 mpg is about 18 gallons times 3.50 a gallon is 63 bux. Thats about a buck a mile plus add for wear and tear and your time. If he had to hire a truck I doubt he could find one for under 3 bux a mile and everyone is busy anyway. If you only get 5 mpg then you are up to 98 bux. Add about 4 hours or more of your time and loading it up, then 3 bux a mile isn't unreasonable.

I would suggest that you ask what they have to unload your trailer, my brother has been stuck delivering hay when there was nothing to do the unloading. They pushed the bales off of the trailer, which turned into a lot of work for him.

As far as pricing, I would figure how many hours I thought it would take to make the round trip and then decide how much money I wanted per hour for my equipment and time.

Can you sell local? If not make it worth your time. Can he send a truck for hay?Let them haul it, that way no risk for you.

My neighbors haul me round bales for $5 per bale...delivery charge. Thats usually 30 miles or less. Just do you what you feel is good for you. :)

07-.24 is for the drivers wage or maybe the fuel. Can't be for doing the whole thing including fuel truck and driver. they're about 2.50 per mile low. When I was on the road 15 bales would be a partial and be a partial rate though I would put as much other stuff on with it and would have still been 1-1.50 per mile depending on whether it had to be tarped or not. Plus a tarp charge.

What's it worth to you? Sometimes, I'm headed that way and won't charge much. Sometimes it's out of my way and I charge enough to cover fuel and food. Sometimes folks will rub you wrong and you charge them alot!! Sometimes, consider the circumstances and don't charge anything........

I end up charging the two ladies 1.50 per mile. It was 65 miles one way so I made just a little for my trouble, they had nothing to unload with so I had to help them push the bales off, I end up hauling 14 bails that was all I could get on my trailer. Thanks everyone for your input.
