So today I went to start the Case VAC I use to rake hay with the one that has run just fine for years. It is also the one I was trading part with to try to get this other one running. Well it would not start but did start the last time I tried to start it. Ran the battery down trying so changed the battery. Wasn't getting spark so I hot wire it. It ran for a little while and died. I checked the points and well even with out checking I could tell the gap was way to wide but it has run just fine for years. So tomorrow I am doing something I have not done to a running tractor in a long time. I am putting in new points. Still have not gotten back to the non running VAC. Have hay down so not sure when I will

Yep, old you got a lot of stuff (I do, as well) that's wore out!

When replacing points I eyeball them, then check with a dwell meter, correcting the gap as needed.

When growing up I was taught to keep potentially oily feeler gauges out of breaker points, or at least to clean them well before using.

I clean a gap gauge before I use them and even then I use the flap from the box the point come in to clean the points. I am also one who believes in don't fix it unless it is broken or you will break it. My BA and W Speed patrol fired up just fine. Had to move the Speed patrol so I could get the BA out to cut hay with.

Hey there Rich, hope alls well down your way, you posted So tomorrow I am doing something I have not done to a running tractor in a long time. I am putting in new points.

Unfortunately I cant say the same,,,,,,,,,,,,grrrrrrrrrrrr lol,,,,,,,,,when I was a used tractor dealer and farming with a lot of different used tractors I HAD TO REPLACE A TON OF POINTS...............

Of course I FIRST checked the gap and cleaned/buffed/polished/filed etc using a points file if and as needed (which often cured the problem) but if they were badly burned and pitted I simply replaced them. The cheaper ones sold at big box stores were not as good quality as those I purchased say at NAPA or tractor dealers

As long as the condensors tested okay I left them in place as they were better then many new replacements

Soooooooooo having to change out points if they were so badly burned or pitted was something Ive done often IF THEY WERE BEYOND REPAIR AND CLEANING UP

Hope you get it going best wishes n take care Rich

In this case there is almost no points left to say there even points. Don't remember when I got this Case VAC but it has been probably close to 10 years ago s getting that much time on a set of point is good or at least I think it is

For sure 10 years is GREAT on a set of points, I wonder if the ones made nowadays perhaps with thinner or cheaper contacts and coatings will last as long hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm lol

Hard to say for sure. I have the new ones and will put them in here in a little and see what happens. Old points still work and may do the cheap thing and adjust them and set the new one aside just in case I need them. I have hay down and need to do some other things to the baler tractor to have it ready
