JD 6000 starter

On the JD 6000 hiboys, has anyone had any better luck with it starting and the starter / solenoid life improved by running the ground cable straight to a starter mounting bolt ? It has the 219 4 cylinder in it. This one still has the ground strap grounded to the chassis at the battery tray. Keeps wanting to eat the starter solenoids.

Yes, a good direct ground is better. If you can, try to find an unused threaded hole on the block so the cable end is not also holding an important component. Clean away the paint before bolting the cable on.

But what you may be experiencing is voltage drop. Especially if this has a Delco style starter with the plunger type solenoid on the starter. That solenoid takes a lot of initial amperage to pull it in.

A common fix is to add a relay or a Ford fender well type solenoid near the starter. Here is a diagram, yours won't have the same colors or the harness plugd, but the concept is the same. You can pick up battery voltage at the large battery post on the starter. It puts a more direct signal to the solenoid instead of having to rely on power from the switch, through the neutral switch, and all the small wire in between.

Low starting voltage will burn up the contacts in the solenoid (low voltage=higher amperage). Make sure the battery is tiptop, clean all battery connections, - no paint or rust. A ground connection at the starter is even better. Today's solenoids vary in quality from chinese junk to pretty good ones from John Deere. Maybe try a JD solenoid.
