Swapping engines in Husquvarna rider

I have a Husqvarna riding mow with a twin Kawasaki engine on it.

Last night it started to rattle and blew some smoke out the muffler and I shut down. No oil leakage and oil is where it should be on the dip stick but I think it is gone.

Just changed oil and filter about 12 hrs ago.

How hard would it be to replace it with a the 22 hp Predator engine from Harbor Freight?

I think you need to measure the diameter and the length of the shaft and then the bolt pattern. If those three match, it should work.

Try looking at the external_link.com for persons who have re-powered their tractors with different engines. They list lawn/garden tractors by brand.

My son came out to start my Onan 18 hsp. twin one morning to mow grass. I was standing beside it when it started and sounded like the world coming to an end, knocking, missing, smoking.
I was the one to shut it off the day before and there was no problem so figured maybe a chunk of carbon came loose. I sprayed carb. cleaner down the carb. with it running, then give it a big shot to flood/kill the motor then let it set a couple hours to soak.
It started with the same hammering then the carbon hit the muffler and no problem since. Tractor has almost 2000 hrs.. on it now.

Not sure what model you have but I purchased a Craftsman lawn tractor several years ago that is the same as a Husquvarna , both made by AYP. If you can figure out which Craftsman tractors would be similar to yours,You might look for a used Craftsman with a good engine as around here they usually sell relatively cheap.

(quoted from post at 07:50:01 06/10/21) the bolt pattern and shaft are same. will the wiring hook the same? As long as it starts and engages the mower deck.

That's like 98% of the job there. If you don't have to measure and drill new holes, and the clutch fits the shaft, figuring out the wiring is trivial.

The Predator engine willl have all the same functions, but it won't necessarily be the same plug.

Many engine failures are caused by grass clippings blocking the cooling fins. Pull the engine cover and check for grass clippings.
I've seen two blown engines with less than 400 hours caused by grass clippings.
One was a briggs engine on a husquvarana. The other was a kohler on a cub ztr.

I have a 22 hp Kawasaki in a toro zero turn. Last year it was giving me trouble, it wouldn't run right. I traced it to a coil. Replaced it and was good to go. I cut the lawn a few times this year and developed a backfiring issue. I just replaced the other coil and it runs very good.
