Try Northern Tool, they have a lot of trailer accessories.

Not sure how good they are or if it would even be practical to make a good one. Someone serious enough to steal a trailer is probably going to have the equipment to cut about anything off.

Old560,

I used a length of chain and chained the two passenger side wheels together ( through the spokes if you wheels allow it). I also painted the chain bright orange. After a foot or two of someone dragging it, they'd probably unhook.

Get a 6 inch length of pipe that will slide over the hitch. Weld a heavy chain to it. On the trailer side weld a link of the chain. Connect the chain from the pipe to the link with padlock.

Close the hitch (either on or off a ball) place a L shaped piece of angle iron about an inch long on the flipper to the left in the image. clamp the angle to the flipper tab. Bolt or weld the L shaped tab to the flat area where the flipper stops when the hitch is closed. hold the flipper against the new angle, and drill a 3/8 hole through both at the same time. All ready for a lock. Jim

That is a bulldog hitch, like I have on my horse trailer. I use a Master trailer lock, which clamps a dog up into the ball chamber. Cost about $30, and has worked for years at horse events. But perhaps the thieves just don't think my old trailer is worth stealing. I think several brands of the clamp type locks will work.

How about one like this. Available at True Value Hardware or probably online at truevalue.com . Item 145563

Get a ball and cut the bolt off and lock it in the coupler. Get a long shank lock that goes through the safety bolt hole

That one has been down to be unlocked in
about 5 seconds not using the key. Though
that is what I bought. Figured a little
discouragement is better than none.

Here is one that is pretty robust, but so it's the price. There are multiple suppliers of the same style.

If you need dot inspection, welding on the hitch is probably some sort of red flag tho?

I would do this, but weld a tab on end of pipe where it would bottom out on the stamped steel area behind the latch, on the side that is welded to the trailer frame. Drill hole thru tab and side of the frame and hitch.

Any type lock that leaves the ball socket open is useless.
If I was into stealing trailers, my drawbar would be pintle that works just fine to move trailers quickly.

(quoted from post at 13:10:56 06/08/21) I got the picture off e trailer web site.
You can also get the pin to hold the receiver in keyed alike.

LOL, what happens when I slide a hunk of pipe over that lock and start bending it back and forth a few times??

I have this style on mine. We had trailers in the area getting stolen recently. Someone would pull in with a truck, hook up and take off. As my dad would say this will at least keep the honest people honest. Might make them take a minute or two longer and that might at least be a deterrent.

I have a homemade lock. It is a starter housing I gutted. It slides over the ball hitch. I have a large heavy Chain and lock.

Different approach;

When you unhook the trailer jack it up as high as the jack can go and insert a locking device to disable the jack or just remove the handle.

Pretty hard to steal a trailer when you can't get it down onto the ball of a truck in the first place.

Find one that you can run your chains though also. Lot of campers get stolen,(or repossessed)by looping the safety chains over the ball. Trailer will stay on long enough for you to get it where you can do your crime in quiet.

I use the masterlocks with the lug that goes inside where the ball is like Hay hay uses. On amazing I bot three all keyed the same which made it handy to use. Plus used a long shanked lock of the type where the shank has notches and pulls all the way out when unlocked. Those bulldog hitches should have a hole to put it through when you close the locking ring around the closed hitch dog.

Even with 2 locks on my bobcat trailer, guess I need something to stop the thieves who wrap the chains or use pintle hooks to take something. Here in KS a thief can be half way to mexico by daybreak. Chain won't go through the holes in the wheels. Thought about a screwing an anchor into the ground to lock to but I move it around sometimes. Maybe a steel rod through the holes in the wheels or something. Or some kind of rod through the jack would work on a big trailer but not the smaller ones with boat type jacks. Just don't want to have to crawl around in the mud to hook and unhook something. The farm is on a U.S. highway so anyone can drive by and see them and the thieves will stop and look to see if anyone is home and if I am there then they make up some excuse about a problem with their pickup.
