Irrigation Reel

I have a ABI brand model 1012 hard hose irrigation reel. Has approximately 950 ft of hose on it. It's the older orange one not the newer galvanized ones. About 15 foot from the gun cart, there has been a splice in the hose since we've had it. It has come apart and needs replaced. Got in touch with the local irrigation co. to come fix it but I'm getting the run around and no return phone calls from them. What is the correct size of hose on this thing ? Looked online at ABI but only find manuals for newer stuff. If knew correct size I might could order a repair splice from another dealer. It's impossible to get an accurate measurement the way the line is egged out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Farmboy 81 I am assuming it is a poly line that is wound up to bring the big gun across the field. What about taking a measurement very close to the gun as this will have had the last strain on it and won't have been wound up and should give the best answer. Another thought get both measurements on the line where it has been egged and the actual measurement will be between the two of them. I have experience with lay flat hose travelling irrigators and the sizes of hoses are all very different so don't have the trouble you are having. Good luck with it. Might have to search for a better dealer or go direct to the company and talk to someone there, you will get an answer it is just finding a good source of information, parts and installation information.

If it's only 15 feet from the gun cart you could swallow the 15 feet, forget the splice and hook it up right there at the cart. While you have the hose off the cart, - measure the fitting on the cart to determine the I.D. of the hose.

Thank you JD Dave and Matt. The other local dealer that sold this brand new went out of business several yrs ago. Only 1 irrigation dealer left semi close by. I try to shop locally but they're testing my patience. Broke down with it 3 weeks ago in the drought when we reallly needed it. Still no joy from them yet hence if could learn the I.D of poly hose, the dealership 2 hrs away could order one to fit. The way it's made, there is a 6 or 8 bolt flange made onto the end of the poly line to bolt poly to the gun cart. How would you re-attach this flange back up the line where it had the splice ? It appears to be melted onto the poly.

The circumference around the outside of the hose should remain about the same whether it is round or egg shaped or flat. Measure the circumference and divide by 3.14 to get the outside diameter of the hose. Subtract two times the wall thickness to get the inside diameter of the hose.

There is a tool to butt weld two pieces of hard hose in the field. I used one several times years ago and it worked perfectly. Check with irrigation dealers, they should have one for rent.

cut the hose off near the break you will need to do that anyway if the splice is like the one in ours and carry it to a supplier, they should be able to match up a repair coupling using that piece of hose, they should have the tools to install it also cause if the hose is like the one we have it will require a some type of installation tool .
