If I add a 4x4 to top step

The rise of each step is 10 inches

May not look purity, but it functional and FREE. Made from scrap materials

Is that the finished results?
Might want to have the 4x4 go full width.
Might cause miss step if left as is.

It is best to have all rises from ground to landing equal.

I just put the 4x4 there to make a
measurement.. I already have a full
length 4x4.
I add 4x4 to make both rises 10 inches

Make that added lower step real grippy. Add some weld pimples or wrap it with expanded metal, etc.
Your wet shoe/boot slips slips off and your shins might get skinned by the original step.

No, he doesnt worry too much. In real world usage that step would hurt someone. Make it a real step or start wearing shin guards. But then again, maybe not, you probably never use your tractor when it rains or is muddy, or there is a heavy dew. If you did you would already know that he was giving you good advise.

No way a ladder rung could be 4 inches.
You are thinking steps.
Ladder rungs should be 10 to 14 inches.

I agree. That smooth 4x4 even full length is a accident waiting to happen.

Remember-- the people that designed and built your foreign tractor are alot shorter!!!!

Reminds me of the story about why Walt never built a Disneyland down there.

Would have gone bankrupt, nobody tall enough to go on the rides.

On the way to Avon Sunday we went passed the Mayberry Cafe in Danville, Indiana.
Thought of Barney.
They still lave the old squad car in front.

exactly! we have those things that measure steps at work that we use to get cheaper insurance. We always here how the Asian plant employees get more steps, when you have half the stride of an American you get more steps!

(quoted from post at 09:52:22 06/02/21) The ADA calls for riser heights between 4 and 7 inches

Besides that, the riser heights and tread depths should be uniform. Old rule of thumb for stairs was 7" rise with a 10" tread depth. Older people can't lift their feet as high tending to walk with a shuffle plus they need a deeper tread such as 12" or so which is more stable when you can put your entire foot onto a tread. If you can't get your full heel on a tread some can tip over backwards. So if I'm doing stairs for something like a deck using 6" dimensional lumber which measures 5 1/2" I may go with a riser of 5 1/2" and then leave a gap between two boards and at the back to get a tread depth of around 12" +-.

Of course ladders are different but the higher the rise it increases the need for something to hang onto. An old submarine sailor like Old doesn't even need steps to go down a ladder.

The way things are going, they will probably start putting little elevators or handicap lifts & ramps to get on a tractor or combine.

(quoted from post at 04:48:47 06/03/21) Your right, why even try?

You're right, why bother making a SIMPLE EASY improvement that will immensely increase the stability and usefulness of the step, when you can just leave it as is and wait until you slip off and hurt yourself to decide that maybe it should be done differently?

Better coat it with wheel bearing grease to preserve the wood.

Things have changed.
I watched the Deere 237 corn picker promotional movie, and Deere was all bragging about easy and safe it was to go up there.
They pictured a guy climbing the tractor with the steps being at least 25 inches apart.
By then, I think the engineers and the customers were comparing easiness of the steps to easiness of climbing on horses saddles. So they did not want to use lower steps as horses do not have them.

If we had to return to horses saddles, maybe osha would oblige to make saddles with electrically foldable ladders?

OSHA would want all horses built like a wiener dog.

Looks like the step bolts on. Just raise the step 3 1/2".

There you go throwing out a little common sense for an easy fix.

OK guys, be nice here. As someone truly handicapped anything that works is a blessing. I'm still in denial but I'm coming around. I have had both knees replaced, my neck fused, a hip replacement, minor surgery on both feet all in 6 years. I haven't gotten to "grandpa" steps on the 706 or 1206 yet but it's going to be fact rather than fiction. Lot of thing us broke down old farts need are either expensive or non existent. Things may not meet OSHA rules but keep us active. Just today I called a scrapper to get a TLB I have that needs a rebuild that's very close to the value. I can't fix that. I love having it but can't justify it. Thinking that way on my last 8N Ford too. Just don't need it and haven't used in 4 years. Being handicapped is horrible. 2 options. Live with it or suck starting a pistol. So me? I chose to live with it. I push things. Do stuff I'm not supposed to do. Don't jump if someone comes up with something that helps me or others stay active. It beats the alternative!
