Cottonwood tree infestation?

I noticed the upper branches of our 4 year old cottonwood had died. Set up the ladder and cut off the dead branches - lots of boring ants (?) had holes in both the live
and dead branches. Anyone have an idea of what it is and how to treat it? Nice tree and I would hate to lose it.

Thanks for your help.

Diazinon is a well known insecticide that is good for leaf miners and crawling/eating bugs , so it should work for you. Your problem may be reaching the top with your sprayer.

Here is a good link below to a variety of issues that affect Cottonwoods. I know that up here in the last ten years or so, a fungus disease has attached tons of Lombardy (Columnar) Poplars which were a big rage for planting 20 years ago ..... now they are being cut down since they rot from the inside out and are a hazard. Poplars I think are a close relative of Cottonwoods. Anyways, not sure where you live but here's the link, maybe you'll recognize something ....

These things a making holes in the bark that resemble 22 holes. I thought at first one of the kids had cut loose with the 10-22 but the ant holes inside the tree showed me I was wrong.
