Old mining equipment memorial

I went to a old coal mining equipment show yesterday in cadiz ohio eastern part of ohio where the silver spade a large shovel used in the coal field's. The picture is of me setting in the cab that they preserved the size of the machine dwarfed the cab you can Google it to see how big it actually was. The chain link is from the big muskie a one of a kind maybe the world's largest dragline that also operated in eastern ohio for another coal company the central ohio coal company. The tractor is a empire brand name. I dont believe it had anything to do with mining the fellow who found it in a barn just brought it for desplay he added the second seat so his wife could ride around the memorial park with him just thought some of you would find this interesting thanks Rick

Nice pictures Rick, if you have interest the Bucket from the Big Muskie is on display in South East Ohio. It is in McConnelsville, Ohio.

I live just outside chandlersville im about 30 minutes from the bucket. Im 64 yrs old now when i was 15 i could see the top one third of the boom operating from our house a few miles away at night you could hear the material hitting the ground when it emptied its bucket

Great pics, looks to be a permanent display of old equipment. I'd like to see that next time through Ohio. That Empire tractor looks cool with its big deck and fixed boom pole. Can't tell if it has operating 3 pt. lift arms. Thanks for posting,

Gerrit

You know, seeing massive machines such as this one is amazed. But what amazes me is the machines (and their designer's depth of mental resources) that build these huge machines.........case in point, I saw a picture of the building of an engine for a super container ship.....mind boggling.

Texasmark, and think of what's on the line when building something like that!

One failure could be the end of an entire corporation and the end of several engineers careers!

Go back a few years before internet, before calculators, before global communication, before standardization of manufacturing, metallurgy, McMaster Carr...

Amazing what could be accomplished!

Big Muskie had a 220 yard bucket. The machine itself was sold to a scrapper for $375000.What fascinated me as a kid about Big Muskie was the fact that it ran off a big extension cord, tied into the power grid that passed by the site.My uncle was a rep for Bucyrus Erie during the time it was developed, and built. He didn't rep for that division of the company, but everybody that worked for them was aware on a day to day basis of how the project progressed. After it had been in service a few years a slightly bigger machine was built in Germany, that one was named The Captain.

A guy at the show who helped put the equipment park on display said the silver spade had a catastrophic failure in the turn table in 2006 when they were attempting to bring it up out of the pit in 2007 they started scraping it where it broke down.

I lived near Euclid, Ohio as a kid and remember the two plants there that built the dump trucks. They parked them in the lot at E222nd St. and St. Clair Ave until they shipped. There would be thirty or forty lined up. The building are owned by Lincoln Electric today.
