Early 8N steering part 2

So went and looked at it today. Steering box is locked up and you cannot turn the steering wheel so much as an inch. I tried to get the pipe plug out to fill it with oil but it would not come out. It is the slot type plug so I'll go back Thursday or Friday and bring my butane torch with me and see if heat will free it up. Not sure what I'll do if that doesn't work. Hope filling it with oil will free it up I sure don't want to have to rebuild it.

So here is another one. Different 8N that is a later model doesn't have the fill plug on the side of the steering box so how does one fill that one up.
Thanks

Right side or left side or does it matter?? I'm guessing your talking about the late model not the early model 8N right or can that be done on both

Tried left side battery box bolt hole and it was a blind hole. Then tried right side battery box bolt and it was an open hole at least on the newer of the 2 that I am trying to get lube into the steering box. This is a 1950 late as in side mount distributor.

Will not be doing anything to the early one till Thursday or Friday. The early one I don't know the year but it is a front mount distributor and it has a slotted pipe plug just below the battery box bolt on the right side. But I could not get the pipe plug out and it sure would be nice if the battery box bolt would also work to fill the steering box

It's probably full of water, assuming it locked up sitting. Is there a drain plug?

Be nice to get the water out first, then pump it full of oil or grease from the drain.

If there is no drain, it just about has to come apart.

No drain on either one that I have seen. The one I filled today the late model is my 8N

The early one is someone else's that I work on from time to time. The I-T manual is no help as for fill or drain plugs

If the front wheels are off the ground and still locked up, I would speculate the top bearing has come apart, which is usually the case, and peaces have gotten into the gears. Lubrication is too late. Time for an overhaul; Lubrication leakage over the years ends up with the top bearing not having any lubrication.

Steering was fine 6 months ago?? Hard to believe the leverage of the steering wheel can't overcome some rusted up bearings. But lubrication is cheap!!
remember there is a bearing directly under the steering wheel. Easy to get to after the steering wheel is off, which itself might be a problem.

Once the steering wheel is off the bearing is right there, and I guess some lube could be poured down the shaft to the top box bearing, provided there no air hole about half way down the steering tub, on the bottom side.
