Clean Up After the Ice

I cleared up the worst of the broken trees yesterday using the front end loader, chain saw and IH truck. Its the worst I've ever seen. They tell me in town
yesterday it was just a constant buzz of chain saws and a parade of vehicles hauling loads of branches out of town.
I recorded a bit of video. Got wacked in the nose by a branch and later walked into a low hanging tree branch knocking me down. I think I'll leave the rest of it
for a winter project when I have more time and need the exercise.

Tree Hauling

Does it happen very often to get a damaging ice storm in your area in May Rusty? Your John Deere is in some nice shape ,it runs just like it would have when it was still new

2011 I had just purchased a 10k dump trailer. A 90 mph straight line wind put trees on power lines. I had 5 buildings damaged by trees. No power for 2 weeks. I hauled 25 loads to a place in town that chipped up the branches for compost mulch. It took me an hour to load, take to town, dump it, get back home and load up another load. I would still be working on cleaning up the mess if I didn't have a terramite with homemade forks and the dump trailer.

It will be safer to work when the ground is no longer so slippery.

Even though they look almost the same and are beautiful, I love to see hoar frost, but hate to see ice.

I hope your damage is minimal and the cleanup goes well.

From what I hear most of South Saskatchewan and some of Alberta got the freezing rain and a little snow in that event. The little John Deere does run great but it still does not start as good as the much older, Perkins powered Massey Super 90. I may have to go back to the two battery starting system on this one as it seems to need more cranking speed for a cold start than the Massey does.

Not to minimize your damage, but it's like a BB in a boxcar compared to the ice damage we suffered here in Feb. I've been working 3 months & have about 20% of it cleaned up. I had 7 brush piles, about 30'x30', burning at the same time 2 weeks ago. Some of the trees are uprooted and all have hanging limbs. I've decided that the next 2 owners of this farm will still be cleaning it up.
PS, Be very careful cutting limbs from a ladder, I've purchased 2 pole saws, battery & gas.

No doubt there are a lot worse damaged areas somewhere but compared to what we have had in the past, this is the worst. Almost like a twister went through, but this is just tree damage. No buildings.
I'm wondering now why I didn't get the pole saw for this job. Pretty sure my brother's is still in the shed.

Wow! I cannot even imagine having ice right now. It is running +95F down here in the deep south. Hope everything turns out ok for you.

We were in the high 80s a week ago too. Today I'm having to keep moving to keep warm. High winds and barely 60 degrees.

We had a similar situation with the ice last year. Had lots of tree damage. To speed things up, I use a set of clamp on pallet forks for my loader bucket. I use ratchet straps to help hold the forks onto my bucket. I also rigged up a guard on the forks so debris would not fall back on me in the seat. I am able to scoop up large piles and stack them pretty high on the burn pile. I can also pick up large logs, too. Less chain sawing means less work and my back feels better!

It's not the prettiest solution, but, it works great.
