I started the backhoe and cracked the timing cover screws as it was losing roms. It immediately revved back up and ran normally. So it looks like the injection pump is the problem, the retaining ring? How big is the issue? Does the pump have to come off to be fixed? Should I do a complete pump rebuild rather than just the retaining ring?

Yes, it has to come off. Follow the instructions in your service manual for static timing the engine and pump, before removing it. Yes, some will say you can do it yourself, and maybe you will be successful. As many others, and maybe more, have tried and cost themselves more when they did something wrong or broke something, then ended up sending it out anyway. Best to have someone properly equipped to do the repair, has parts, and can test/calibrate it properly take care of it. Send it to Dieseltech, Al Baker (the Pump man), or one of the other pump guys. JMHO

I don't think you should try taking it apart, just timing it when you put it back on is a critical task, it has to be done just right or it can cause engine damage.

Pump needs to be removed to fix. Shut off fuel, take that little cover off and turn the engine slowly until the marks on the two disks under the cover line up. Then you can remove the pump.

Do not move the engine while the pump is off. When you reinstall the pump you just need to line the two marks up.

This is one of those cases where if you are asking how to do it, you are best to take/ship it to a professional.

keep in mind that on the drive shaft there is two sealing rings that go back to back one face front on face back the one facing back goes in like you taking a christmas tree through the door but first and if you fold it over putting it in you well lose diesel fuel into the oil pan.. now i know i get lot blow back on this next statement but you can take the glass ball out the fitting on the top and run your machine and yes it can mess up the pump i been taking this type pump off for some 30 years now i know that there a few that i have taken the glass ck valve out of the fitting that are still running most time i did that guy was planting or haying need to finish then was going to call me i get fix but some just never called now lot guys use diesealteck has good reviews i call spencer diesel out iowa ty send me a rebuilt pump i send then the one i taken off

I spoke to a local diesel mechanic. He
said the same thing, remove the glass
ball and it could be run, but he said
there is risk in doing this. He said he's
done about 10 so far this Spring, and a
boatload more over the past 35 years. He
fixes with a lifetime guarantee fix.
About 700 for a complete rebuild on the
pump if I get the machine to his shop.
