International 400 Planter-- Worth Anything?

Hi Guys--

I have an IH 400 air planter that was left behind by my father after he quit farming. It sat in the shed for many years (probably 20 years) and I guess is in relatively decent shape given its age. It worked when it was parked. Probably could use new rubber if nothing else.

Is there any value in these units? If so what should I expect to sell this unit for?

Thanks!
Beefey

It is worth about scrap price. They were a good planter and still work though newer models are more accurate with seed count and singulation.

If you were close to me I would give $1000 for it. I bought mine for $500, 5 years ago and have not been able to find another under $1500 in Manitoba. They are good and yours is in WAY better shape than mine.

That is actually the best 400 planter made BUT proly not worth much except to a sweet corn hobby farmer. I planted many acres with one that didn't have the disc openers, it had accu-plant runners. to many good 800 series wide planters around that sell for nothing! nice find; a great invention by IH!

Maybe you could arrange a mutually agreeable meeting point, and price, or a trucker running empty into Canada, that would haul it for a reduced price.

Best thing to do is advertise it on an IH site such as Red Power. It's missing at least one fertilizer opener assembly which will hurt a little. You can try asking 1,000 dollars and maybe the right guy will be looking when you list it. My feeling is that you would do well to get 500 dollars so be quick with any counter offers.

I don't think they are that bad...I pulled a 6 row 30 with dry fertilizer for 25 years. Didn't have a monitor, just looked for dropped seed when turning around...good planter. Sold it 4-5 years ago for $250 with new opener discs to help a young guy out.

Thanks for the responses. I listed it for $1200 on CL today and have had a number of inquiries and even one of those authentic gentlemen that called to say HOLD THIS FOR ME I'LL PAY THE ASK AND BE THERE IN A COUPLE WEEKS... haha

But overall it seems worth it to the right person. I run a couple hundred acres which isn't a ton but just too much for this unit. For a sweet corn farmer this does seem like a good find!

That is a very nice looking one well kept. I hope you get your price.

Here, 4 years after those came out everyone was pulling Green planters, and those early 400 and 600 models couldnt get hauled off the farms fast enough. They did not work well on the rolling hills around here. I see them sell for $100 for scrap the few that are left on sales.

The 800 and 900 models were popular for beans around here, corn still wasnt real great but acceptable.

The 1200 series is when Red finally gained some market share back.

It will be funny to mention a $1200 400 planter around the older farmers here. Will be. Real conversation starter.

Not all of Us hold it for me guys are Iranian princess. Some us are working 14 and 16 hour days on a day job and trying to farm on the side and we cant get there any sooner

They were a decent planer though simple was good. We still have an 8row 30inch setting in the shed. Dad would have a fit if we sold it for the space and at scrap price which is about all it would bring around here. Planting with a white 16 30 right now. And a white 13 row 18 inch for beans.
