1948 Dodge B-1, Truck- flathead 6 cyl; (Grandpa's Truck); so I have kitted this carb and took it off a second time and recleaned the holes and ports; simple carb right....It starts and runs with choke about 3/4 pulled out; push choke in any or all and it dies. The mixture screw on bottom base makes no difference when running. Ball and Ball carb... Clean fuel- new pump...what do I do? Thanks guys!

My only thought: have you or did you verify that the top and bottom mating surfaces are flat and not leaking? A flat plate of glass and emery paper can be used to make sure there is no internal leakage.

Please post pic of truck.

Had 1650 oliver that i put the venture in upside down. Same thing only would run with 1/2 t0 3/4 choke. adjusting did nothing. do not know if this is possible on this carb. Learned that lesson hard way i had that carb off several times before i caught what I had did.

Any chance there's a vacuum leak somewhere?

Does the truck have vacuum boosted brakes and/or a vacuum two speed axle shift?

How about a manifold gasket leak or possible internal crack in the exhaust pre-heat area?

Are you SURE the gaskets between the body sections are correct and there's no missing or extra holes, or other differences that could cause a idle-circuit leak?

The screw in the lower section is for idle mixture and won't have any effect until the engine is running properly so it will idle down.

Also, I can' tell for sure in the photo, is the stone or stacked brass discs filter present in the sediment bulb?

(We used to have an old KB-5 IN truck and the local FD has an old IH parade truck that both used the B&B carbs and there were a few other old truck around with them so I am no stranger to them.)

Good evening: I am not trying to analyze anything here, but I am pretty sure many Ball & Ball carburetors have a combined brass fitting where the fuel inlet screws in (like your filter bowl) is the same piece where the float inlet needle must seat on the opposite side of same fitting. The installing of the filter bowl may have turned the inlet seat, screwing it inward, and altered float level.

IMHO ,having to choke an engine to keep it running means the main vent tube is plugged . Did you clean item # 36 in the attached link..
