I used FLEX SEAL on my rusty rims.

A tire guy told me if the rims are rusty and you are worried that it might poke the tube, take a roll of duct tape and cover all of the rim except where the bead sets. I have 2 or 3 here that have tape on the rim. They will last longer than I will!!

We tried that once and the tape Came unstuck and balled up and punctured the tube .
