Boy, do I feel stupid!

Working on "The Thumb" on my Jubilee tractor FEL. Looked at lots of pictures and thought I had the mounting straight in my mind. I must have lost my mind-haha Should have completely assembled it and checked it on MY BUCKET. Seems I suffered a bout of "Old and Blonde" syndrome.Off to the metal shop for another piece of steel.

Just bolt it to the front of the top of the bucket instead of the top. Unless the metal is thin there, it should travel where it needs to go. Maybe
two more bolts! Jim

I think the proper way to do it is to keep it in it's present position, unbolt it and gauge the mounting angle when the arms contact the lower lip of the bucket. Then weld in another piece of steel to bolt it to. That way I will get the most room when raising it up out of the way. Just bolting it to the front will restrict the movement. I'm a'gonna get it right this time-haha

Looks to me like it's hitting the bracket it pivots on. it'll never go any lower with the mounting bracket in the orientation.

I think that would work too,You want the tip of the grapple teeth to almost touch the cutting edge when down, especially if you going to load stringy manure!

Use it for the big stuff and pick the small stuff up by hand. That will get you a lot of exercise minutes on your apple watch.

It does not look like you have it mounted on a very big
machine so it will probably be fine. If that was on anything
with 100 hp or more I would certainly want a pair of X
braces from a bit in front of mount points it swivels on the
bucket to that square tube. As in to beef up the ..grapple..
itself from giving side to side.

Your being to hard on yourself. Truth be told we've all done things like that. Nothing is permanent as long as you've got a torch and a welder.

You could cut some relief into the lower portion of the two arms and then weld a re enforcement onto the inside of the arm. I had the same issue when I switched to a manure bucket and had to weld a mount on to it for the ram.

Move it to the location like Jim said then clamp it in place and see how it works and looks you might like it better than you think. with it straight up it should be out of the way for most things and be a good backstop for taller things like tires and such.

The problem with cutting relief's into the arms to increase travel is you are defeating the designed cylinder protection stops.

If the cylinder becomes the new travel limiter all it will take is a small bump into something with the grapple in the down position to completely destroy the cylinder, there is some serious leverage there.
I still have the remains of a couple of cylinders from one that someone with good welding skills but poor geometry comprehension brought to a consignment auction.

According to the manufacturer, the mounting surface should be parallel to the bottom or the bucket. Mine isn't. as you can see from this picture. Don't know how I missed that, but I did. Just got home with another piece of steel to build the proper mount.

Seems to me you just needed to mount it flush with the front edge but then check it with the thumb fully extended to see where it comes out at the bottom as you may need to raise it.

If I do that, I won't get the full height when in the raised position. I will follow the manufacturer's guidelines this time.

I just re-read your post. Moving it flush with the front edge won't change anything. It is already hitting on the factory mount.

On feeling stupid- Don't worry about it. The more stuff you do, the more times you'll feel stupid. You get used to it, trust me!!! ;)
