So I am starting out farming with my grandpa, doing a lot of dreaming/planning. We are already running a 16 row planter and picking with a 8 row corn head so I hate to change it up (go to a 12/23). I'm thinking about upgrading planter and/or planter tractor. Currently, as stated before I have a 16 row 30 corn planter (pulled behind a 145 hp 2WD Massey), plus a 16 row 15 bean planter (3pt mounted on a 180 hp FWA Massey). When I was growing up my dad has always had a kinze, first a 12/23, and now a 16/31 bulk fill. I kinda fell in love with a kinze and really want one now that I am starting to farm with my grandpa. So my question is, how big of tractor is needed to pull a 16/31 (doesn't have to be bulk fill)? We'd be doing some no-tilling up some pretty steep hills in a few places plus conventional farming. Everyone around that has them is planting with a 200-275hp FWA tractor. We have that 180 hp Massey FWA, but I'm not sure it has the balls to do it...I'm more concerned about weight and the drawbar/rear end being heavy enough, I know those Kinzes are not light planters! We do have a 7140 CIH FWA that could run the planter, but it's our main tillage tractor. Not sure which would be the route to go, buy a new tillage tractor and plant with the 7140, or buy a new planting tractor, or get by with the Massey...Or probably the cheapest route buy a new 16 row 30 planter and just keep the old bean planter...but I sure am getting tired of dragging wide son of a gun down the road.
