Farmall M replacing 45 sliding gear

Hey I got the 4&5 sliding gear replaced thanks toYT
and I decided to replace the drive shaft gear too. I
hammered the new shaft gear into the bearings but
it seems to turn a little hard is that how its
supposed to be or should fly around easily

Which gear are you referring to? The output shaft is the top shaft. The other shaft is called the lay shaft or Countershaft, or cluster gear. no gears are normally hammered into place. They are pressed into bearings, or onto shafts with a Key for transmitting power. Jim

In the link please give us the numbers of the parts in your description ... hammered the new shaft gear into the bearings.. you can click the image for it to show up clearer as a picture. When installing a typical ball bearing as is used in these transmissions you want to drive directly on the race that is giving the press fit resistance. As in, you are installing the bearing on a shaft that fits into the center race you only drive on the center race. Assembly with a press is ideal but on final assembly in the tractor it is not possible.
Poke here for diagram

When you reply at the bottom of the Advanced Posting section use the oval Choose filled button. Then it will take you to choose from a file on your PC or phone.

It worries me that you said you hammered the shaft into the bearings.

An appropriate press would be a better option.

Should have said ..Choose files.. button. If it says you are tying to post contains erroneous entry you are hitting the spam filter. With a post count of 8 you should be okay.

Fifth gear is a splined coupling between the splined output shaft (where 4/5 sliding gear resides) and the input shaft splines. 5th is a direct drive from input shaft to output shaft. Its power does not go through gears. 4th slides rearward and engages a larger fixed gear on the counter shaft. Jim

New bearings may not just keep spinning but before the input shaft is installed it should turn easy. After it's installed it will have the friction of another bearing and will be turning the counter shaft. Front input shaft bearing should have a ring to place shaft in correct position in housing. Seal and bearing retainer retains outer ring of front bearing, spacer goes between it and rear bearing. When yoke is tight it keeps shaft retained to inner race of front bearing.

So I will see how clear the attached picture posts, you are saying you replaced the ..driving shaft.. or commonly referred to as the input shaft. If this is what you were ..hammering.. in then I wonder if pilot bearing 72 or some of its rollers are not out of place? Only way to check is to pull the input assembly back out. I really like to help folks out here, but I cannot see how it would be so difficult to open the diagram at the link I supplied and reply with numbers. The print is small and the diagram may be difficult to translate into the actual parts so I will give you a break. I suppose if you work with this type of thing from way back as a young lad it probably is second nature to me.

Looks like it is blurry, I do not know why a screen shot from my phone looks fine when views from a library but is blurry in a post.
