Oil filter purchase issue

We have a late 80's vintage mitsubishi 180-2 excavator with a 6D15C engine that I have been unable to find an engine oil filter for. Old time Cat parts man used to cross it up to a Cat filter but he is no longer with us and nobody now can seem to find a cross reference. I have surfed the net looking for hours with no success. Anyone have an older cross reference chart or an avenue I can pursue?

It's a cartridge filter and I hesitate opening the can without having one enroute. Machine doesn't get a lot of use and putting off a filter change right now probably wouldn't hurt anything.

Thanks Cowman, that looks like the ticket and the Wix crosses over to a Napagold 7081, either one very available!

If no number on the old filter a parts man worth his salt could match one up from the old one. Or next time write the number on the inside of the hood so you can just read and get. That's what I do with odd things like that. I also get a couple so I have one on hand. Filters are not that expensive in the scope of things.

I'm with you Cat guy; I am a big fan of sharpie's, always try to write filter #'s, etc in a sheltered place for the next time and try to keep spares on hand. I also (if I don't have the parts manual) write all filter numbers and those of any parts that I have replaced, into the shop manual for every machine I own. Although we share it, this excavator is technically my brother's and he has been doing the maintenance, but unfortunately he isn't as organized as I try to be.

I might add that when cross referencing filters, always click on them to check their sizes, length, width, thread type & size, and o-ring size. Spin-ons may be longer or shorter but the threads and o-ring have to match. Canister types have to be more exact. When multiple lengths of spin-ons are available, I try to buy the one with the most filter area as long as the length and width will fit.
