After 2010 baling wire started going up in price each year pretty fast all the way to $125 a box but then in 2015 it started dropping each year til this year it started back up.
Last year it was down to $75 a box.
The joke on the farm in 2015 was that each bale held 15 cents of wire.
But decades earlier, my grandpa would charge 15 cents a bale to cut, rake, and bale, and he made a living at those prices.
Not every farm needed each operation so they were priced out accordingly. Some farms needed hay cut but nothing else. Maybe a farm had a broken hay rake so grandpa only raked for that customer.
But prices were 3 cents a bale to cut hay
2 cents a bale to rake
And 10 cents a bale to bale.
No stacking or hauling services offered. Grandpa did not have the manpower for that. Bales were sold in the field or property owner made their own arrangements. I am told even the grain sacks were bought and sold in the field. No time for hauling. Had many acres to cover with allcrop 60.

Back when I sq baled with wire I think 2 boxes of wire would bale around 700 sq bales so about 350 sq bales per box of wire. The bale count per box is determined by set bale length. I sold my wire baler last yr. Quality control on baling wire is not near as good as it was 40-50 yrs ago. Wire manufacturers put less oil on the wire also.

Back when I utilized my JD 347 baler I opened the box tops & poured used oil on the wire.

I can't answer that question because I have very limited experience with twine balers because until the last few yrs most small sq balers in my area are wire tie.
