A 30x40 enclosed shop...at todays wood and metal
prices which one costs less to build?Im talking
frame and rafters here only, siding and roof will be
steel regardless

More to figure than just the cost of materials. When I built my shop I built with wood framing because I had to build it by myself and wood was lighter and easier to handle. I think your material prices would have to be done at a local level. I'm sure steel would be cheaper in some places and more expensive in others.

lumber has gone crazy now. but unclear if referring to building with the steel beams or what kind of building this is. probably be better off getting some quotes from the people involved in this work , its just speculation here.

I like my metal arch building, but it's difficult to drive a nail in the wall to hang things on!!

Im asking if building a shop with all steel construction compared to a wood frame, rafters, etc. but enclosed with steel sheathing and a steel roof which one is less expensive currently?

Ya but poles or actual stud walls your not giving much to go on. They build a complete pole building in 2 days. One that small is basically one day job With steel beams u need a crane. I cant see Steel beams being cheaper than wood.

When I was thinking about building a pole barn I quickly discounted stick built after talking to the tax assessor.
Because I already have a garage my second building will be assessed at 3% based on the square footage. So I downsized my design to 1200 ft and taller for a second floor.
Pole barns are the cheapest assessed value.

Talk to your assessor and building inspector.
I was required to combine the property pole barn was built on the my house property. Building Permit costs $120.
Property taxes $400.

Check to see how many hoops you have to jump through.

Only way to know is to get quotes.

But quick assessment is that fabrication steel is a bit more than double what it was this time last year.

Lumber is anywhere from 3 to 8 times the price a year ago.

I was pricing a 50x100 last fall. Local place that makes steel siding and roofing said that it was cheaper at the time to use wood outer sidewalls on 16" centers and wood rafters that try to go to steel framed posts and rafters. I see a place now putting up a steel frame building and using the metal studs (16" centers) for the outer walls. Steel studs are required for commercial. Was also told not to waste the money for 6" roll insulation since it compresses so much that it is ineffective compared to the standard 3".

What I don't know is how the structural strength of each stud (wood or steel) would compare.

In my county when I built my garage, added on to my house and had a hay barn built, I got a letter each time from the tax assessor saying- we have drove by your property and noticed you built whatever-. How much did you spend? On my garage I said @ $9000, but I am not finished yet. The other 2 I stated what my expenses had been. The first barn I built I don't remember them asking about. I don't recall the effect on my taxes-did not seem like much. No permits needed. Mark.
