Well some idiot was using my fuel tank for target practice with his .22. the slug did not fully penetrate the steel tank but did cause a very small leak. what can one use to seal this 'pin hole leak back up on a diesel tank? JB Weld?

Napa sells a two part gas tank fix that works great. Can be used while it's leaking. Just work it together and spread it on. Been on my dc tank for 30+ years.

If diesel fuel get fuel below hole and just weld it up. NO diesel fuel will not explode if you just do it and don't fool around at it.

Rub a bar of hand soap on it to stop the leak. Then clean it good to get something to bond. Body putty, JB weld etc.

A sheetmetal screw with a tight fitting oring.

Tighten just enough to stop the leak.

Then wire brush or flap disc grind down to clean metal, embed the screw with JB Weld, paint when cured.

Steve,
I going to get a ticket from Barney for saying I used a screw, o ring, and then epoxy over screw to repair a pin hole leak in air compressor. That was over 20 years ago.
I bought the air compressor used in 1979. It looked like an antique then. Don't use air compressor much. I left it in my old workshop after building a pole barn. I bought a new dewalt compressor for pole barn.
I agree, a screw and o ring works. If hole is bigger, just use a bigger screw.

Don't want to hijack the thread but what can be done to a 250 gallon fuel oil tank to keep it from failing. My heating oil tanks are in the cellar and are 50+ years old, I am worried about rusting and failing. I am considering replacing and have one almost empty. I've been told they will not just start dripping, they will catastrophically fail.

Bill,
I have an ole tenant who insists I keep his 50 year old oil furnace running.
I told him of my concerns too. The tanks and furnace are past due to be replaced and I'm not installing a new one. He has electric heat.
Water collects at the bottom of tank. That's where it will start leaking when it does.
I'll use screws and o rings. I'll call around and get tanks pumped. I'll cross that bridge when I have to.

I have had only one experience with this two part putty you roll together in your hands. It was dry and crumbly and would not stick to the tank so out of frustration I mixed a little fuel with it to make it more gooey and it worked like a charm. It has been holding for going on 20 years.
