Upcoming Equipment Auction

The local auctioneer is having his semi-annual equipment auction Saturday. Of the equipment listed, I am interested in a NH 477 haybine, and ground-driven Pequa 710 tedder, and (if I don't win the 477) a JD 21 crimper. Several hay wagons, too.

I will be looking at this equipment tomorrow. Any thing in particular I should be looking out for? Most pequa's I've seen were PTO driven. Are the ground-driven ones OK?

I currently cut with a IH 100 sickle on a '41 Farmall H & rake with an Oliver 207. No tedder. Dry times are a problem in my area. I can bale hay with what I've got but do lose quality and quantity. Small (20 ac) operation. Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Dave

If you get the crimper & use it in tandem with your 100 mower make sure the engine isn't tired. Had a '42 H with the standard pistons that I ran a 120 mower & 2A conditioner behind. Did ok for a season & a half. Had made three passes in tall grass hay when the engine backfired hard a couple time & ran poorly after that. Barely made it back to the house. After pulling the head, found small chunks of piston missing in the 1st & 3rd cylinder. Pushed that tractor down river. Ran the same setup behind my '49 H that was rebuilt with the Super H Fire Crater engine kit. That worked fine. Every once & a while, in heavy hay, the rollers would wrap tight when they would slow down enough to not discharge the hay fast enough & I was in 1st.

One other thing to consider is the PTO shaft. The early H's had the 1 1/8 vs the later 1 3/8. The larger diameter would be better for running the crimper.

477's are good machines that have age on them now of course. Most got ya items can be pretty obvious....worn drive belts and sprockets, rubber missing from rollers, wobble box having slop in it. Pequea 710, ground driven no less? I dunno. I would look hard for a 2 spinner tedder before getting one of those......
