IH 300 utility manual steering adjustment

I posted the other day on the IH board, and got some answers, but then got side tracked asking about Jackson power steering. Anyway today I tried to adjust my 300u manual steering box, but get too much play on r/h side, and on the l/h is ok. Both sides were loose before. I know a LONG time ago someone had posted the proper procedure, but I cannot find it in the archives. So I am broadening my horizons and asking here on tractor talk. So any help is appreciated, thanks, Mark.

I can only suggest creating shims from quality steel. It may require surface grinding to thickness. and plasma torching to rough size. (I am assuming the need for flat shims here). Jim

Thanks Jim, but I am trying to adjust both sector shafts deeper into the input shaft worm gear with the adjuster screws. Not sure what I would shim. When I adjusted/tightened the left side screw the pitman arm play decreased like it should. When I did the right side, it was worse-looser. So I tried backing off the left side and tightened the right side screw, but it did not change anything on the right side.
I stopped because I thought I remembered a long time(years) ago reading the procedure and it had to be done in a certain sequence. But I'm not sure. Thanks for any help, Mark.

Guessing here Looking at the alignment of the two adjuster screws, and the fact that (I think) the left sector is not adjusted because it has no arm or cam follower stud) the two adjusters might fight one another against the right sector arm. It would make sense to me that opposing each other would position the follower where it needs to be. loosen the left screw, and tighten the right to push the arm to the left deeper into the worm. Then make sure they just don't drag. Was there a wear track on the left side of the arm from the screw? This is all I have. Jim
