John Deere 2 cylinder

Question for 2 cylinder owners. When cranking the tractor, often it makes a loud POP noise. I have been told this means the magneto is weak and needs repair. Wanted to confirm this. I have a 1946 John Deere B with electric start and it has done this over 20 years, not on every start though. In the last year, it has started the POP noise twice. Eventually, it does start and run good.

Timing might be off that it fires before it is supposed to. Does it want to kick back when it does it, if so it is to advanced. If it does it after top dead center, then it is to retarded.

It could very well be the mag. The mag might not throw a spark for the first couple revolutions and then when it does spark there is the right air and fume mixture in the muffler to make a bang or pop. Why is the mag doing this? It could be as simple as dirty points or the points sticking and not closing or it could be as major as the coil.

Hello,

It doesnt roll back when it pops. I tried a rebuilt mag and never got it to work. I was able to get the old one back on and timed it in. Could be points havent pulled the cap, not sure when it was off last. Someone was in that mag before, pre 1980s as thats when my Dad bought the tractor.
