Gehl skid steer possible control issue?

I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum but this came up when I looked for Gehl forums so I'll give it a try.

Recently I bought a mid 80's Gehl 3360? I believe it is? Anyway I have ran many other skid steers tractors dozens etc in the past, this one though is scary, the previous owner admitted it has been like this as long as he can remember, I know she isn't new and as smooth as others by any means, but the drive controls are scary, you HAVE to have the RPMs very low especially if you have no attachment on the front or else of do any direction control too quick it will go crazy. I know this is all hydraulic control but when you're first getting going the control stick barks and try to buck back, if your not holding it it will cause it to start bucking in all directions, and if you're going one direction and try to go another, you better be very very slow and gentle or else it will buck the machine so bad I flipped it last night...

I know some old machines are rougher/more aggressive but for instance my bother has a 00' bobcat, whe you ease on the controls the levers are smooth and there's no buck, and like most hydrostatic type machines if I go from one direction to another fairly quick you hear his machine groan like a pressure relief then ease to the new direction. This one is violent, I went to back away from the bucket and while still slowly moving back I went to ease into Fwd and turn and it stood up on the back plate and the control stick started bucking all over the place, causing the machine to do wheelies endo's spins and flop on its side...

Is this just how touchy these machines are? Or is there a valve or something not working right? I also noticed when I let go of the implement control stick it springs back to the middle "neutral" position like normal, but the drive stick doesn't, it stays where you leave it, making it a bit harder not to jam directions. Is this also normal or again something broke/ not adjusted?

There is definetly something wrong. I have run Bobcat, John
Deere, Gehl, Cat, and New Holland skid steers and yes some
of the newer ones are touchy, but not as you describe. I
actually ran a New Holland 232 track skid steer at work today
and think it could possibly be the worst of the 12 or so the
company has as far as being touchy and jumpy. Also wont
travel in a straight line. Looks nice, but it needs to go to the
shop to get checked out. I wish I could point you in the right
direction but I am unfamiliar with the way Gehls are set up.
Please get it fixed before you or someone gets seriously
injured.

I have ran newer ones too, bobcat, ASV, Cat, my buddies cat 216B I love, very smooth and easy, hell I'm sure I could pop a bottle cap with it I can be so precise, and very quick too. But this old Gehl yea its a death trap so far haha. The control stick doesn't seem to have very much slop indicating loose joints, but I'll check, I checked the hydr oil once before firing it but I'll check it again. This almost seems more like something wrong with the hydraulics though?

Almost like metering valve or something? Like I said when your first moving it in a direction the control stick barks and try to buck back, worse when turning then fwd or back. I mean you can control speed (slow through to full speed) its just not smooth, its as if I took my hydro grass cutter at full fwd and jammed it 3/4 reverse, when changing directions, when I change directions on this machine, kind of hard to explain I wish I could post a few vids.

My CL40 Ford (74) will buck with the best of them. To the point I won't let anyone else run it. It has done this since i got it 20 years ago. That being said, I have learned how to operate it at all speeds smoothly. Some suggestions: 1) Make sure drive chains are tight. 2) Take as much play out of the control levers as possible. 3) Don't try spinning it like a top. Mine is worse on pavement or very hard surfaces. 4) IF YOU CAN'T GET USED TO IT IN SHORT ORDER, GET RID OF IT BEFORE YOU GET HURT!

Can you explain this differently? I am not sure what you mean by bark?
Like I said when your first moving it in a direction the control stick barks and try to buck back, worse when turning then fwd or back.
Are you getting feed back to the controls?

By bark I mean the control stick trys to jump back and forth or in all directions, so if I try to change speed in any direction or first set off the control stick trys to jump around. Changing directions like reverse to fwd, if you have any speed you have to start slowing down long before you want to stop and be very slow and gentle on the transition, if you do it with any kind of speed the control stick will try to jump around in all directions so bad the machine will start jumping around, doing wheelies and spinning.
