Cummins question?

Say you had a 4B-T with just a few hours on it. Then for some unknown reason the oil filter came loose while you were not there and the engine was just idling. Now the engine has run out of oil and the crank won't turn. What most likely happened to stop rotation of the engine? Pistons seized or would the rod bearings fail first? Or maybe the Mains? Guess I will find out. Will the turbo be OK since it was just idling? May just go to scrap! This is not MY engine.

I agree, normally the bearings lock up first. If it was just at idle and not hot the damage may not be too bad, you just wont know until you get in there.

That happened to my neighbors MF 180, Perkins A4.236 diesel years ago while idling using a log splitter. The rod bearings failed when the oil pump failed with aluminum bearing coming off the steel bearing shell and sticking to the crank. After cleaning the aluminum off the journals with muriatic acid, which HATES aluminum the rod journals were fine. Just MAKE SURE if you try this DON'T BREATH THE FUMES!! After repairing the oil pump, and installing new standard rod bearings engine was fine. Mains had no damage at all.

The 175/180 diesels used the Perkins 236. The Super 90 and 410 combines used the Perkins A4.300, actually a 302 cube engine. The 285/1085/540 combine has the Perkins A4.318 which is similar to the 300.
