How much difference will there be between a John Deere 336 and a 224t square baler? The 336 has the super sweep pickup with 4 bars while the 224 has the wide spaced teeth with 5 bars. The plungers on both have rollers. The 336 has gear driven knotters while the 224 is chain driven. Will there be any capacity difference in the field? I just bought a clean little 224t to add to my collection.Wish I could say it was cheap (It wasn't) but it is nice. Will post pics in a few days. Tom

Like Roger said there is a considerable difference between the two in strokes per minute in regards to the plunger. I don't have a book to tell exactly what each has. I know when we went from a NH 270 to a JD 347 wagons got loaded several minutes sooner without pushing the 347. I would say that the 336 was the single most popular baler around these parts when small bales were everywhere. Guys might be Case, Ford, White, whatever with tractors and a mix on other equipment but a lot of those farms had a 336 baler along with a JD 7000 planter. The 224 will do fine for you in any event. The wide teeth might even be a benefit if you have stones that might get picked up by a closely spaced tine bar.

From what I remember when they were new there won't be a lot of performance difference between a 224 & 346. 224 operators manual states maximum 72 strokes per minute. I do remember minor difficulty replacing shear pin when brass pin that powered knotters sheared because timing of knotter to plungerhead was required. The tongue jack on 336/346 was a definite upgrade

80 Strokes on average seems right for a 336 with a maximum of 93. That difference will add up on a long day in terms of productivity.

A lot of water has run under the bridge since 1971 when I first demonstrated/delivered NEW 336/346 balers but IIRC neither model could be pulled much faster if any than a 224 while baling hay!!!

I only see 80 PH strokes per minute mentioned in 336 operators manual.
