Water pump shaft

A water pump shaft makes a great heavy duty punch. The one on the left I have had and used for 40 years. Came out of an old John Deere 55 combine. The one on the right I just took out of my 92 Ford Pickup. Just a tip that I thought might be useful.

Counter shafts, broken extensions from socket sets, pole barn nails ground flat, ratchet handles from failed ratchets cut off square, all suit me fine. If they cannot be filed on the striking end, I heat them and normalize about 2 inches to keep from splitting fragments. Jim

Notice how the one on the left is mushroomed. It has been hit on more than one occasion with a 4lb hammer. By the way,at those times,I held on to the punch with a vise grip. LOL

I got a fuel pump pushrod out of a small block Chevy, stator shaft out of a Corvair transmission, about a foot of a broken torsion bar and other assorted bent and ground special tools.

They do make good punches , but being a hardened shaft, good idea to soften the end as they do send off splinters. I like the ones from the 400 series IH engines water pump.

I have had metal flake off several times and cut me and even penetrate my skin. One piece cut thru my shirt and into my arm. Got it out myself. I also had a trip to Urgent Care to have a piece removed. He had to use my magnet to pull the metal out after he cut the wound bigger! And I got a stitch. ALWAYS wear safety glasses.
I once made a chisel out of Cummins head bolt. I heated and soaked the tip in oil, and ground the tip to a chisel edge, heated and re soaked in oil again. Worked real well and never faked off. Mark.
