tractor hauler Hydro boost

I hauled home a bunch of tractor parts from Nebraska to WI and getting off I90 I lost the power assist to the brakes, Then I realized I did not have power assist to the steering. I had replaced the pump five or so years ago with a reman. My question is I had been having trouble where if you stepped on the brakes hard the assist to the steering would be temporarily lost. I am replacing the pump and will flush the lines. The hydra Boost unit is damp but I believe that that is from spillage of brake fluid checking it because the cover is hard to get off and sticks. I have sprayed it off but never really had time to clean it. Do you guys think the hydra Boost needs to be replaced as long as I have the other half tore apart? It had been getting farther apart when it pressures up but that might be a poor pump. I asked a pro and he was stumped. How often do the hydra boost fail?

Never replace 2 things at once. Flush the hydroboost with new fluid, install the new pump, and see what happens. Jim

It would help a lot if you told us what truck you have , how old and if possible what hydraboost you have. on the bendix units used on medium duty trucks there is an electrric back up pump for the hydraboost. Smaller gm units used an accumulator. When you talk about pump I assume you mean power steering pump which supplies hydraulic pressure to both the steering box and hydraboost when running. From what you describe it is most likely a power steering pump issue.

" if you stepped on the brakes hard the assist to the steering would be temporarily lost."

The most common cause of that would be a slipping belt.

Does yours use a serpentine belt?

If no slipping belt issue there's internal problems in the P.S. pump.

Serpentine belt was changed about a thousand miles ago. Pulled the pully and it took a good puller to get it off. I did get another reman pump for 50$ plus tax. Have not had time to put it back on. Investigating how to flush the system being it has more than one return line. Probably will rig another tank for fluid and drop both returns in a oil catch pan. One place says jack the front up and turn the wheels back and forth with the engine off but that will not do the booster. Another says start engine turn wheels after stepping on the brakes. Got a little more to do before I get that far. Any better ways?
