Bought the Case with tiller last week.
Motor was stuck after spraying Deep
Creep in the spark plug holes all week
it turned over. Unfortunately fluid only
shot out one plug hole. Pulled the
heads. One piston ain't moving. Oddly
that heads bolts were finger tight,
other side was bolted on tight. Seller
knew!! And I knew, seller ain't a man of
high moral values......but it was worth
the gamble. Any way..... looking at a re
power. I can't wrap my mind around the
fact that it's not simple. I understand
the onan has a flywheel alternator,
electric fuel pump...... Not worried
about that. I just want a motor that
will bolt up and attach to the shaft
with a love joy connector. Why won't
this work? This engine is pull
start.....seems like a simple fix while
we rebuild the other one. Keeping this
tractor for the garden.

Some one explain it too me in simple
terms..... Lol

Ah and Onan and dealing with someone that was not 100% honest , yep i think we all have paid the price of real world SCHOOLING . Some times that education comes at and extremely high price . For a direct replacement there is a place in Indiana call the Small engine warehouse and they have it ALL , from the parts to drop in engines .

If a guy scams me for thousands then I figure he's a scam artist. If he scams me for peanuts then I figure he's a real bum. Why not be up front with the whole thing, that always puzzles me. I bought an old Husqvarna motorbike from a guy once for a measly $400, it was actually running. When I took the flywheel cover off to check the timing I found out that someone had twisted off the flywheel/crankshaft nut, it was a left hand thread. When I took the motor over to a dealer the next week for him to look at it he told me the guy who sold it to me was in about two weeks before and had twisted that nut off himself. The flywheel was still on (tapered shaft) but he said it was dangerous and could have come off and potentially injured my leg. Crazy world, good luck with your project.

I knew the tiller was worth more than asking price of whole thing..... Was hoping to get lucky with tractor

I have several Case 442 and 444 but mine all had Kohler engines on them.

I believe the Onan equipped ones need a different pump mounting adaptor to go on the back of the engine, the Kohler ones look sort of like a top hat and the Onan ones are made from a piece of bent plate.

The adaptor bolt pattern needs to be compatible with the holes on the new engine.

You may need to shorten the shaft on the engine for everything to fit right.

Shaft size not a big deal as you can buy Lovejoy coupling halves to fit various shaft sizes that will work with what you have.

If you ever plan on using it with a mower or blower you will also need an engine that will accept a clutch on the flywheel end of the engine.

I have a 444 that I put a 23 HP Kohler Command V-twin on, the clutch and pump from the old 14 horse 1 cylinder were a straight bolt on.

I once was in a hurry to get the garden tilled, I had the identical tiller as what you have.

To get by I just hung the tiller off the loader frame on the front of my 970 and powered it off the tilt circuit while driving backwards.

Chances are the original engine will not be rebuildable, or be cost prohibitive to do so.

I would go for a permanent repower, and concentrate on making it as reliable and usable as possible.

A Lovejoy coupler will not like the shock load of a piston engine and will quickly eat the spider.

How is it coupled now? Possibly modify that coupler or find one similar, maybe a roller chain coupler with a cover.

I have seen a number of them repowered with other engines,, you are correct on tiller value,, but the three-point hitch is worth twice what the tiller is,,

They came from the factory with the Lovejoy coupling connecting the pump to the engine, only ever changed one spider in 25+ years and that was only because I had it apart and had one handy that looked better than the one in it.

It's only turning a hydraulic pump so not really any shock load.

I know a guy who replaced the Onan in his Allis 620 with a Vee-2 Briggs and Stratton.
Seemed to go well. There is a Honda kit, as well.

You might find it helpful to Google Case 446 repower. I have done this for mowers it has been very helpful.

I would first search for another Onan The Allis Chalmers 616 620 720 simplicity 616 620 720 Facebook group has many contacts. Dont buy a generator engine unless you are ready to change the crank shaft. The generator shaft is tapered. The down side of Onan is they were bought by Cummins and the parts prices are high There are parts sources on eBay

Steve@Advance, every engine powered wood splitter ever made has the engine coupled to the hydraulic pump by a lovejoy coupler. Sure they don't last forever, but what does?

That's pretty much all these Case "hi-wheel" lawn/garden tractors are anyway... Engine coupled to a hydraulic pump.

Why not tear it down to see what's wrong with it? May just need a rod. And just so you know that is a P series, it should have a 43 series.

I'm sure you will find a reliable engine for your repower. When its up and running (properly) you will be amazed at what this little tractor can do.

Tear the Onan Dow and look it over. They can be expensive but dont have to be. Ive gotten several back in service with rings, rods and gaskets. If needed used cranks are available. I know of some sources for reasonable parts, me included. Dont jump into a swap til you look inside. JMHO

if you lived closer I have an engine like that. Might cost an arm and leg to ship from Caanada

grandpa Love I would do as dcarp said ,look up small engine warehouse ,I got a briggs replacement engine for my zero turn 18 HP brand new for $500 and another $50 for shipping.

I would just do a proper twin cylinder repower of something befitting of that machine and put the Onan out to pasture permanently. Onan parts are expensive and somewhat hard to find. That situation is not going to improve if you are keeping the machine.
