John Deere 730 disk size

Ive had a John Deere 730 diesel for a few years and always used a
6ft 3point disk behind it. Im looking for something a little bigger.
Would 14ft be too big ???

If you have sandy soil a 10-12' will be plenty. In heavier ground you could pull 14'. I had a 730d for a while and it could pull the 14' but struggled.

some must have had a sick 730. used to pull 15 foot plus 4 row 494a planter with John Deere over the disc hitch in fourth gear. Ground was not sand, was heavy clay.

I pulled a 12 ft with my 730D. It handled it just fine in stalks. Was a good load the first time over in plowed ground. I wouldn't want any bigger.Better to make a few extra passes in 4/5th gear that to pull the crap out of it in 2nd/3rd.

With a 730 in todays world, you most likely dont have a tremendose amount of ground.A 12 ft ft will serve you well. Yes you could probably pull a bigger. But it's not a contest to see who can pull the biggest disk.Easy pulling a 12 ft in 4th or fifth gear is a whole lot better than pulling the guts out of it in 2nd or third with a 14 ft or bigger. Then you have wheel slippage to deal with.Nobody said a word about that.Duals, fluid filled/weighted;dry... are all factors. You may have the 'ponies',but you may not have the traction. Also depends on how deep. to the spools,or letting the wheels carry it some.Go ahead and buy a 14 or 16 ft. But in the long run,12 ft will be best.

A Deere RW 14' with 18" blades will be no challenge to a 730 in any soil. A 14' IH 490 with 20" blades in cornstalks in hard ground will be a decent match. A 14' 490 IH with 20" blades sunk in soft soil will be a real test for a 730.

Very few two cylinder Deeres were dualled here in Iowa back when they were the big tractor of the farm. Weight was added instead.
