Off topic truck bed trailer

I have a ford truck bed trailer that I
have considered loading scrap metal into
and once it gets full hook to it and head
to the scrapyard which is only about 7
miles away from my house.

My father in law has a couple he uses for
the same purpose he swears they work well.

My concern is how well do they actually
pull on the road? Are they safe? Any
information on them Is greatly appreciated

Thanks

That depends on how the trailer tongue is built.
The length weight and strength will all come into play on how the load is distributed between the towing truck and the trailer axle.
If the proportions are correct and you keep some oil in the trailer rear end they pull just fine.

They pull good and are as good as the the guy who made it is a good welder/fabricator. I have one that was built purposefully to haul fire wood. It is built on a 1 ton frame with 1 ton running gear. I like to gut out the brake drums just so there aren't problems in the future or dragging brakes.

They do work good. I seen a ford ranger pulling one that was made from a chevy Silverado at the gas station. I had to ask him about it and he said it work good but is hard to see around lol.

My 65 Ford pickup became a trailer 36 years ago. Pulls great. I had the tongue made extra long. The shorter the tongue, the rougher the pull.

I have 9 of them, handiest thing around, half of them are from small pickup while the other are 1/2-3/4 ton rigs. Brother told me to haul in his 91 ranger, said I'd make a trailer out of it, he said he wouldn't waste the time, just loves it behind his 4 wheeler for fencing and hauling trash to dump. I've put hundreds of miles pulling them, just don't hook two heavy loaded ones around at highway speeds. Put six together and pulled the kids around when they were small.

My first trailer was made from an old international 4x8 bed. The guy who made it removed the truck axle, used a square axle.
It was well made, safe. When I got rid of it, the bed and tailgate was totally rusted out.

I prefer to buy new trailers instead of attempting to build one.

My 10k dump trailer gets used the most.

I think anything under a certain weight you don't need brakes. No sure, thinking 3k. That's about all you may be able to haul with truck tires.
