D282 Thermostat Replacement?

Im replacing the thermostat in my Farmall 706 Diesel. Ordered a new one but it doesnt look anything like the old, but the #313942R92 says its the replacement. New one on the left and old on the right in the below photo. New one is considerably smaller in diameter and has an extra rubber gasket and that metal piece as well. I cant see any way to assemble it so that combination would seal the thermostat in the opening. Looks like it would just float around. What am I missing here?

Tim,I dont have a definite answer for you. But manufacturers sometimes modify/change/ 'improve' existing parts.Sometimes for 'improved performance',or for purely economic reasons(cheaper to
make).try your IH dealer,or someone who specializes in IH parts.Steel wheels ranch;Redrunrite;Bates Corp...

I replaced the one in my 656 with the same engine but it was several years ago. I dont recall having any problem then. I would swear its just the wrong thermostat but everywhere I look it keeps coming up this part # & picture. Think I got it from Bates but bought it last fall and never got around to installing it then. Im baffled as to any way to install the new one.

From the STANT online catalog, HTH.

IMHO, I don't think the T-stat you are replacing was correct for your application to allow the correct functioning of the coolant bypass.

So you're saying it should be assembled in the order shown and the rubber seal is at the top? Then there must be a shoulder inside the thermostat housing for that rubber gasket to seat against. I dont recall a shoulder but dont have it in front of me. Will have to look when i get home.

I cant remember what the one in the 656 looked like either. It was 7-8 years ago I did that one. But I dont remember any confusion when installing it at all. So it must have been obvious at the time.

Thanks for the help!

"there must be a shoulder inside the thermostat housing for that rubber gasket to seat against"

Yes, as I recall there is.

Please post back with what you find, and if it seems the 'stat will be held in place and function, this will help others trying to figure out what to do with the modern replacement "stats".

There was a thread a couple of weeks back about another type of 'stat of the type pictured below for older IH engines, they get installed "downside up" from convention.

The strangeness here has to do with making the external coolant bypass function as designed with more commonly available modern thermostats as the original design units have become nla, IMHO.

I put one in my 706 with 282, got the same kit as I remember. but for the life of me know what I did. I know it works and have not had a problem.

"wore out"
I looked at the thermostat housing last night briefly and think you hit the nail on the head. It does have a shoulder for that seal although its heavily crusted up. And the bypass couldn't have been working with that wrong thermostat that was in it. That was probably my main problem.
I just bought the 706 last fall and really only used it once in December to disc about 10 acres. It didnt give me any trouble then and the temp seemed normal the whole time but the seller mentioned he had trouble with the thermostat at times so I had bought a new one shortly after acquiring the tractor but never got around to changing it.
When I moved it out of the polebarn a couple weeks ago It suddenly spewed a spurt of antifreeze out the overflow after running for just a few minutes. Temp still seemed OK after that but reminded me to look into it.
I will see if I can get the housing cleaned up tonight and then post of a picture of how it goes back together.
Thanks for your help! :D
