radiator water

I am not the only one with tractors siting for years with only water in the motor block and radiator. It's prpbab;y too late to treat the water now, but if I do something it will be better than nothing. Or like the old saying leave sleeping dog lay. Is it too late for anti freeze? I do keep the good stuff in my running tractors. Stan

37 chief,

If I may, demineralized water is different thatn distilled water, which is decidedly different of tap water.

Demin water is the proper water to use, with antifreeze. Too pure of water can leech iron our of the block. Tap water can have too many impurities.

I recommend a drain, flush, drain again, then the ratio of antifreeze with demineralized water.

It doesn't freeze where I live. I am more worried about the rust forming all these years, and if it ever runs again it will plug he radiator. Stan

Since they won't run, and may never, I would just drain them.

Be sure to remove the drain plug from the block and poke the hole out several times to be sure everything drains.

Have you cracked the engine oil, and gear case plugs loose to drain any accumulated water?

They probably should have renamed it corrosion control many years ago. I agree it is way better to drain it than to have plain water sitting in it. Before use it would need a flush because there would likely be a high potential for passages getting blocked.

My Farmall super c manual has section page 47
About cleaning dirt and sludge from cooling system.
Drain the system.
Mix 2 lbs of washing soda with 15 quarts of water. Fill it
Run till warm up good.
Drain it , refill with coolant .
Note super c has water pump.

I must confess I never heard about demineralized water. I did some searching online. All though distilled is probably better then tap water it can still lead to corrosion. Looked online and the prices were pretty high for a gallon. It would be cheaper and faster just to get the pre mix 50/50 and have no worries. I'm glad I saw this post. I just started to change all the antifreeze in my tractors. Only did one so far.

I have always been a fan of good preventive maintenance including a good flush and re fill the of cooling system as needed ...USING THE PROPER ANTI FREEZE.....In past days I ONLY used distilled water and nowadays I might buy the pre mixed 50 50. I have no scientific or worthwhile proof if it hurts or helps or even matters (anyone here have scientific proof??) but have been (subject to the vehicle/tractor) known to add so called anti rust or super cool or wetting agents or other radiator treatments which doesn't seem to hurt in my own personal experience and observation.

AS ALWAYS consult the manufacturer and/or experts for THIER advice in addition to what may be posted here mine sure included

John T NOT any chemist or radiator or engine cooling system expert, ask them see what they have to say...

If nothing else the antifreeze should have the right Ph balance to help minimize further corrosion.

My experience is when left dry for a long time leaks will tend to show up when you do finally refill the system.
Radiator, expansion plugs, water pump seals etc.

Basically when empty the exposed to air part of the corrosion equation comes into play.

If for some reason you do not want to use conventional antifreeze, you can add water wetter (yes, there is such a thing) and add a corrosion inhibitor to the water.

If you decide to go the demineralized route be sure that it is not water that is demineralized by deionization. "DI" water is very corrosive.
