Hydrogen Fuel Cell

I was researching Hydrogen fuel as a place to invest in the market when I ran across the following. I always thought fuel cells were mostly used by NASA. I haven't heard any buzz about fuel cells until I ran across what I posted below. I found it interesting Cummins, Toyota, Honda and others are working on fuel cells.

Cummins (NYSE: CMI) - an industrials company best known for its engines and power generation products - has been working on hydrogen-based technologies for almost two decades. The company acquired Hydrogenics, a leading Canadian hydrogen fuel cell player last year.

Toyota is one of the largest automakers in the world focusing on the hydrogen fuel cell technology. The company is partnering with Honda to build fuel cell operations in Montreal. Toyota was one of the very few companies that started selling hydrogen fuel cell cars. Its fuel cell car Mirai is extremely famous in Japan. Some other hydrogen fuel cell cars include Hyundais Nexo and the fuel-cell version of the Honda Clarity.

Hydrogen fuel cells will see a huge demand in the future as aviation, trucking, and industrial companies weigh using environment-friendly technology to decarbonize the hard-to-abate sectors such as refining and steel production.

Instead of calling cars EVs they will be called FCEV (Fuel Cell EV)
I didn't know Toyota already has a car in the streets in Japan.
Is anyone working on FC tractors?
If Cummins if working on FC, We may have trucks and tractors running on hydrogen on my lifetime.
Hope you find this informative like I did.

There is a company named Ballard in Canada that has been doing fuel cell stuff for quite a few years. Before I got out of the market, I spent a tidy sum on their stocks - made a tidy profit, then bailed out entirely. By some fluke/stroke of brilliance (luck), I made a profit on all the stocks that I had.

I remember seeing that Allis-Chalmers fuel cell tractor at the National Dairy Cattle Congress show in Waterloo, Iowa! Leo

A-C built an experimental fuel cell tractor in about 1959.

It was rather clumsy looking affair built upon a D10/D12 chassis weighing nearly 6,000# in working order. Output was 20 HP - not exactly spectacular for a tractor this size.

In addition to needing LPG fuel it required and onboard supply of compressed oxygen to operate.

The design was a one of and never repeated.

I went to the big car show in Chicago back in 2007 and the cute little blonde at the GM booth said that GM would have Hydrogen powered cars in full production in 2009 -- didnt happen ! still waiting ! big oil hush them up?? Roy

Fuel cells make a lot more sense than batteries. They would eliminate the long downtime for charging. Next obstacle is the logistics of the fuel. Storage, transport, production all come into play.

Geo: as long as you are looking into all these alternative energy projects. How about Joe Newman's Energy machine? His motors produced their own power.

4520.
Where will we get Hydrogen?
Will we also need O2 or use what's in the air?

Interesting to see something that will was probably invented or improved by NASA finding its way into cars. truck and tractor.

I have only seen the hydrogen and battery vehicles. I still get to play with the big ol diesels.

When I was at Don Garlets museum they had a couble of dragsters running off of Hydrogen which really surprised me

You mean like this? My wife saw this on FB, a perpetual motion car! Some people think it's possible, that the little alternator can keep the batteries charged, the ones that slept through 9th grade science class.

GM has been working on fuel cells for decades. Since the sixties, according to <a href=https://www.gmhydrotec.com>this site</a>. That they have yet to put an FCEV into production is a pretty fair indicator that fuel cell technology still isn't where it needs to be to compete with conventional batteries.

Hydrogen as a fuel is problematic: The infrastructure to support hydrogen-powered vehicles doesn't exist, and the gas has to be compressed to very high pressures or liquified to get decent range. A lot of work has been done on fuel cells that use gasoline or other hydrocarbons as fuel, but if your goal is reduced CO2 emissions, obviously hydrocarbons are not the answer.

The dirty little secret of hydrogen is producing the fuel. The production of hydrogen in mass quantities needed for transportation produces ground level ozone. Ground level ozone is the major component of smog. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Some really smart guy said that, and it doesn't just apply to movement of objects. Our fuel production with gas, diesel, and NG is as clean as any fuel will ever be. As I stated the other day, even EV batteries aren't clean because of their production, end of life, and human cost (being Africa, nobody cares).

The real end game here is the elimination of privately owned transportation.

Good point as I learned yearssssssssss ago many engineering decisions involve trade offs and this is one of those cases. Be it Hydrogen or Natural Gas or Propane or Electricity or Gasoline or Diesel (or wood or coal for that matter) being used to power a vehicle, there are some sort of consequences. Take your choices........

I saw a report a few years ago, the worst deterrent for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, is that they can easily explode in a collision. (Hindenburg)

Using one fuel to produce another fuel and then using more of the 1st fuel to process, compress and store the 2nd fuel is insane. It' the same thought train as electric vehicles- no thought is given to the production of the vehicle, it's systems and batteries. But as long as someone THINKS they are saving the world, it's all golden!

As there folks is the most important point . What people think is more important than the facts .

s I said it another post, "Media thought control" and apathy.

To put a finer point on it, it's not what they think, it's what they FEEL!!!!! It's all about feelings today. Insanity!
