EVs pay no gas/diesel fuel tax, so............
Two states tax some drivers by the mile. Many more want to give it a try.

As all vehicles get to be more efficient per mile, all will be taxed per mile as well as based on some sort of weight rate.
They been crying for years that the tax per gallon and better mpg is hurting their cash flow.

Just earlier this week Pennsylvania's fine gubner proposed phasing out the state's gasoline tax. Did not pay any attention to
exactly what he proposes as an alternative or why he is wanting to change things so cant speak to that.

Think of all the extra they collect
for gas used in tractors, lawnmowers,
generators and plenty of other things
that never touch the road

I think Indiana charges a flat excise fee
at DMV.

I have no issues with anyone posting
questions or comments about EVs or
hybrids on tractor talk.

I do have issues when I post about
anything off topic. A few People are all
over my butt complaining about where is
the tractor?

I think you said once I'm a lightning
rod.

I saw on Bloomberg today where there's a
shortage of electronic components to
make EVs.

Apple is going in with VW to make EVs.
Microsoft is going in with another
manufacturer to make EVs.

This is America, freedom of opinions.

just saw the article in Wash Post and thought it added another dimension to all the EV talk earlier on here. Sorry if posted in wrong place...probably did.

I used to file a form with my 1040 to deduct tax for off highway gas and lubricating oil. Haven't seen that for a long time. Lawn mower, chainsaws, small tractor and it
amounted to pennies.

Toll roads offer trackers that eliminate stopping at toll gates, just bill you directly for monthly toll fees. The GPS on my phone tracks my movements and can distinguish travel by vehicle, on foot and on bicycle. I don't think electronic tracking of individual vehicles for road use fees and taxes is too far away anymore. It could simplify things.

Since the 'huggers are promoting electric, they'll just double up on the fuel taxes to make up for it.

Then there are registration fees, inspection fees, special use fees, tolls, ...

Rest assured, they'll find a way!

I don't honestly think that the taxing authorities are going to let this go for much longer as EVs become more
visible on the highways. Regardless of the fuel used, roads still need to be maintained and repaired. The free ride
will soon come to an end.

Michigan's legislature is unable or, more correctly, unwilling to come up with a way to generate sufficient funding for roads. No doubt they'd love to make EVs a scapegoat to excuse themselves from their own incompetence. They'll probably convert the whole state into one big toll road so they don't have to offend their trucking industry overlords.

They will need to tax the EVs for funding to beef up the power grid once all these charging stations cause it to crash. Don't depend on EVs and sell your gas burners just yet.

Already happening in Canada . Justin just increased the carbon tax again . The more we pay the cooler the earth stays .
One of many give always of Canadian tax money for dubious causes is given to corrupt nations . Odds are high that some of the laundered money is returned to Canada to various persons and organizations .
